"We know how good he [Georginio Wijnaldum] is. Fabinho hit two very average passes and he was shaky in the next couple of moments. That can happen it’s all part of the process.

"Football is a game full of mistakes and it’s how you deal with it. Then we could bring Jordan Henderson on and he was so fresh. Arsenal didn’t have a lot of chances but that allowed us to close all the space in midfield."

On 2018: "Not too bad. The boys have made a big step but it’s important to show it’s a positive process. In 2018 I have nothing to moan about."

"It’s clear it was a wide game. We were really good and did exactly what we wanted to do. We wanted to press them and cut off their build up. They pressed us as well so it was wild. But then when you get the ball you need to calm down.

"The response [to Arsenal's goal] was world class. We stayed clam and really forced the mistakes. Bobby’s [Firmino] second when Sadio [Mane] won the ball. Wow. It was perfect defending.

"We knew in the second half that the game wasn’t finished so we wanted to control it. Mo Salah gave the penalty to Bobby and I almost cried because we all know how much Mo wants to score goals. It was really nice.

"Overall 5-1 against Arsenal doesn’t happen too often so I’m really happy with the boys."

Arsenal

Arsenal manager Unai Emery, speaking to BT Sport: "I think we started well with the first goal and then they had the difference with attacking moments, determination and quality. We couldn't stop this moment.

"The second half we wanted to little by little impose ourselves to find one goal but another penalty closed the match. [It is a] Bad result. This loss we can use to be better.

"We know we need to defensively get better.

"Liverpool have progressed a lot and it is an example for us. We need to do this progress."

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had 13 touches all game - six of them were from kick-offs.

Van Dijk: "We know they are dangerous on the break with their speed up front. It was unlucky that we conceded but we reacted how we should react and think we deserved it today."

"We still need to improve a lot of things. We are very happy with situation at the moment, we have to keep intensity high and continue in this way.

"Anything is possible. We are in a good way, it’s tough but it’s a great time to be a Liverpool player."

Robertson: "A misplaced pass caught us out. We reacted well, got on level terms quickly and from there I think we dominated and took the game out of sight.

"[Manchester City] is a huge one. Everyone in the squad has been looking at. But in December we’ve knocked the games off one by one and we’ve now got a healthy lead. We look forward to it. We will rest now and prepare for that game."

AFCSTU: This result will hopefully make the owners realise, massive investment needed at Arsenal. I think Unai Emery needs 2 to 3 transfer windows to get this squad improved. But I don’t think the owner cares.

Schemer: Emery has got to rethink the way he sets up this defence. Spending alone can't fix that

Tom: We've only just started the Emerolution at Arsenal... very long way to go to get to Liverpool's level, but we can do it.

Liverpool are showing no signs of letting up and they’re gaining in strength. This team is progressing into what it’s going to be.

It might be another six months until we see the best of certain players. We haven’t seen much of Naby Keita yet, others have come in and exceeded expectations. They’ve done such a great job and deserve to be in the team.

It was about the front three last year, but it’s about teamwork this year.

You sometimes wonder what this team can do. Arsenal are a good team, but they’ve been second best on this occasion.

Firmino’s got the ball underneath his shirt – he’s got the hat-trick but he’s been wonderful in terms of his movement and how he orchestrates his team-mates.

Leigh: Terrible for Liverpool. They’ve let in 12.5% of their league goals in this one game!

Dobby: What a great month for Liverpool, 8 wins out of 8, gone 9 points clear and overhauled City's goal difference.

Javel: Oh wow. Not just LFC 5-1 Arsenal, but as quite often, they could've scored 2 or 3 more!

Liverpool were by far the better team today. Can they go all the way? Manchester City need a win against Southampton tomorrow to keep the pressure up.

Van Dijk has been terrific and Lovren has really come of age. It’s about not giving things away. They've been so solid.
