Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers was full of praise for match-winner Leigh Griffiths in his post-match media conference.

"We know Leigh can score goals so you fancy him in a game like that, that if there’s a chance he can take it. We need that in the team," he said.

"I love working with him. He's vital to this club here and this squad. He's got that hunger. It's him realising as well at 28 that when you're at the biggest clubs, you have to fight, and he does that.

"I know that whether he plays or whether I bring him on, we have a chance to score.

"The modern-day striker is about much more than putting the ball in the net. The game has moved on and you have to participate in it tactically and understand how you're working defensively and what your role is with and without the ball.

"That's something hopefully he'll tell you he's developed over the last two years.

"He's got this in-built brain to deal with all this. A lot of players, whatever happens in their world can be a real distraction. He learns to deal with it. I know I can rely on him."

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was pleased his team "found a way to win" despite not being "at the top of our game".

"It was a great win in relation to our spirit, persistence to keep going to the very end," he said.

"Five clean sheets in a row as well, which is good, didn’t have a shot on target against us.

"I understand it [the frustration] with the supporters. They’ve been used to the team being a bit more dynamic and faster and better in our attacking moments. At the moment, too many passes going back.

"But it’ll come and we’ll find the solutions. It’s very important you continue to win and to get a 1-0 in the opening European game, it’s a very important three points for us."

Leigh Griffiths is delighted to have won the game for Celtic despite starting on the bench.

"I'm buzzing," the striker tells BBC Scotland. "I wanted to come on and make an impact and the gaffer said, when we make chances, make sure you are in the box because one will fall to you and I managed to put it away.

"Obviously I'd like to play longer, but it is entirely up to the manager what he wants to do.

"I am happy to come off the bench, make an impact and get the three points for the team."

It's back to the bread and butter of the Scottish Premiership for Celtic and Rangers at the weekend. Both are in action on Sunday, with the champions away to Kilmarnock and St Johnstone visiting Ibrox.

"We can play a lot better," Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tells BT Sport.

"It was a win for our spirit and our persistence. We kept going, we kept fighting.

"We need to improve considerably in the final third at this level. It's still early in the season and we will keep looking for solutions in training."

So, what next for Rangers in this competition? They're also up against Austrian opposition.

Steven Gerrard's men are at home to Rapid Vienna, who sit top of Group G after beating Spartak Moscow 2-0 in Austria.

Another late goal settled a victory for RB Salzburg away to RB Leipzig in Germany, with Fredrik Gulbrandsen making it 3-2 to the visitors on 89 minutes.

Celtic go to Austria next on 4 October.

Steven Gerrard says he is proud of the way his Rangers players responded to his half-time call to show greater belief before coming from behind to draw 2-2 in Villarreal.

"We are a good team when we show it, when we believe and when we go for the jugular," the manager told Rangers TV. "We can create chances against anyone.

"We have unbelievable quality. The big message is watch the second half tonight and start believing you are a very good team.

"It is a fantastic result. I asked them at half-time to just show a little bit more belief and confidence once we enter the final third."

Gerrard thought it was up there with his side's best performances since he took charge in the summer considering the strength of the opposition.

"We told them before the game, we are capable of hurting Villarreal and the other teams in the group," he said.

"To come here and put a point on the board, I'd have certainly taken it before the game. This, on paper, is probably the toughest test for us in the group."

Celtic start their Europa League group campaign with three points thanks to that late header from Leigh Griffiths.

There was a lot of huffing and puffing but Brendan Rodgers' side got there in the end.

We'll get three minutes of stoppage time. Rosenborg haven't posed any kind of threat since early in the first half. Can the visitors muster anything late on?
