  1. 'Rangers' defence is not encouraging'published at 18:19 British Summer Time 20 September 2018

    Quote Message

Rangers have got to organise better defensively. They've let Villarreal have two free headers in their own box. It's not very encouraging for Steven Gerrard.

    Villareal 1-0 Rangers

Six Rangers goals and a Colombia debut this season for Alfredo Morelos, but he is not involved tonight. The striker is suspended after being sent off against FC Ufa.

Steven Gerrard said pre-match that he and Jon Flanagan, who is also banned, will be harbouring some regrets as they watch on from the sidelines.

  3. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 19 mins

    Villarreal 1-0 Rangers

The home side want a penalty as a back-post header strikes the arm of Borna Barisic but the defender was so close to his opponent that he didn't know too much about it.

  4. YELLOW CARD Goldson (Rangers)published at 17 mins

    Villarreal 1-0 Rangers

Rangers defender is very late with a challenge on Alfonso Pedraza as the Villarreal man speeds up the left flank. So late in fact, that he barely touches the wing-back, who sprawls to the turf near the halfway line.

  5. 'Rangers are going to have to get used to this'published at 18:10 British Summer Time 20 September 2018

    Villarreal 1-0- Rangers

    Willie Miller
Former Scotland defender on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

Rangers are going to have to get used to this sort of pressure. That's going to be the way this game is played, particularly when they give away possession too easily or leave themselves short at the back.

  6. Postpublished at 12 mins

    Villarreal 1-0 Rangers

The visitors are toiling as Villarreal boss the ball. The few touches Steven Gerrard's side have had have been rather panicked.

    Villarreal 1-0 Rangers

Former Scotland striker on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

Rangers have not been keeping the ball very well. They're trying to force passes. Away in Europe, you want to keep things tight and not concede early goals. They've lost a goal in the first minute from a misunderstanding between the centre-halves.

  8. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Villarreal 1-0 Rangers

Andy Halliday is penalised for holding on to Karl Toko Ekambi as the hosts look to counter-attack and Villarreal have a free kick in a dangerous spot. The ball is whipped into a packed penalty box and Lassana Coulibaly does well to nod it away.

  9. Postpublished at 5 mins

    Villarreal 1-0 Rangers

There's not much of a crowd inside El Madrigal but the home fans are enjoying themselves as their favourites knock the ball around confidently.

  10. 'It's dreadful defending'published at 18:00 British Summer Time 20 September 2018

    Villarreal 0-1 Rangers

    Willie Miller
Former Scotland defender on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

Steven Gerrard said Joe Worrall was looking lively - neither centre-back looked lively on that occasion. Slow to close down, poor reaction, they're too close to each other. There's no understanding. It's absolutely dreadful defending. But you can't take away from the quality of the finish.

  11. goal

GOAL Villarreal 1-0 Rangerspublished at 1 mins

    Carlos Bacca

Stunning... It's not a great start for Joe Worrall as he gets too close to team-mate Connor Goldson and the ball bobbles off the defender to fall perfectly for Carlos Bacca, who pings a glorious dipping shot over Allan McGregor and into the top corner from 22 yards out.

  13. Harsh memories at El Madrigalpublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 20 September 2018

    Villarreal v Rangers (17:55)

The hosts have never lost to Scottish opposition at home, beating Celtic twice and drawing with Rangers once.

Back in 2006, the Ibrox side were seeking a place in the last eight of the Champions League only to suffer the agony of an away goals defeat.

Four goals were shared in Glasgow and Peter Lovenkrands fired the visitors into an early lead in Spain but Rodolfo Arruabarrena would level the game and send Villarreal through.

They repeated the away goals trick against Inter Milan but came unstuck against Arsenal in the semi-finals.

One look at the goalscorers at Ibrox, Juan Roman Riquelme and Diego Forlan, underlines just how strong El Submarino Amarillo were at the time.

    Villarreal v Rangers (17:55)

    Alasdair Lamont
    BBC Sport Scotland in Villarreal

Local journalists view this Villarreal side as something of a second-string XI. Nonetheless, there is still some impressive talent in the team - Carlos Bacca is starting for the first time this season but the Colombian came off the bench to score the winner against Leganes on Sunday. Ramiro Funes Mori has come in from Everton for about £8m so pretty decent to be able to call on such players.

  15. Katic 'looking a little jaded' - Gerrardpublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 20 September 2018

    Villarreal v Rangers (17:55)

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard tells BT Sport: "It’s important we’re compact. I want our attacking players to use the space an show what they can do.

"Katic has had a really packed schedule since he walked in the door, he came back from international duty looking a little bit jaded and it’s down to me to protect him. Joe (Worrall) looks really fresh and eager to play.

"It’s difficult to read into the Villareal changes – we hope they’ve got their eye on the derby game they’ve got at the weekend and we can capitalise on that.

"The referee loves getting the yellow card out so we have to be very careful. I'm sure the two suspended players [Jon Flangan and Alfredo Morelos] watching in the stand will be thinking, why did I do that? Why did I get sent off?"

  16. Putting the pain in Spainpublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 20 September 2018

    Villarreal v Rangers (17:55)

Rangers' greatest European moment came at Barcelona's Nou Camp when they won the 1972 Cup Winners' Cup final against Moscow Dynamo.

But the Ibrox side have never won in 11 visits against Spanish clubs.

The Light Blues' first game in Europe against Spanish opposition in the 1962-63 season was when they came up against Sevilla in the Cup Winners Cup. Rangers won 4-0 at Ibrox but lost 2-0 in the away tie.

They drew with Valencia in 1979 and Villarreal in 2006.

Just to rub it in, the nine defeats were all incurred without scoring a goal, most recently 3-0 at Valencia in the Champions League group stage in 2010.

  18. Tavernier 'better with Candeias in front of him'published at 17:43 British Summer Time 20 September 2018

    Villareal v Rangers (17:55)

    Steven Thompson
Former Scotland striker on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

Candeias is the right player to play in front of Tavernier in European games because his work-rate is superb. Tavernier is a better defender when Candeias plays in front of him. Goldson and Katic, these centre-halves have been a big part of Rangers' success so far so to rotate it and bring in Worrall is a surprise.

  19. 'We want to challenge in the group' - Gerrardpublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 20 September 2018

    Villarreal v Rangers (17:55)

Rangers are the fourth seeds in Group G but manager Steven Gerrard reckons his side can spring a few surprises along the way and reach the last 32 in the competition.

"We are the underdogs in the group in terms of the opinions from outside, but in the dressing room we have a quiet confidence and belief we can cause a shock and get out of the group," he said at yesterday's media conference.

"We are not here to make up the numbers. We want to challenge in the group and see where we end up.

"This game doesn't highlight how far I've taken the group but how far the team have taken themselves and the hard work and effort they have put in to get to this stage.

"We all believe this is where this club should be after difficult times and not many people gave us a chance of making this stage.

"If people want to underestimate us or write us off that's fine. I can see a togetherness and a team growing. I'm happy where we are at this moment."

Group rivals Rapid Vienna and Spartak Moscow meet this evening in the Austrian capital.

  20. It's a 50-50 game - Jebalipublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 20 September 2018

    Celtic v Rosenborg (20:00)

Nicklas Bendtner and Pal Andre Helland, who both played for Rosenborg in last month's 0-0 draw with Celtic in Norway, miss out through injury this time.

But fellow striker Issam Jebali is "feeling good" after scoring a stoppage-time winner in a 3-2 win away to Valerenga on Sunday that retained his side's two-point lead over Brann at the top of the Eliteserien.

The 26-year-old Tunisian was signed after their Champions League exit and has scored four goals in six appearances since joining from Swedish club Elfsborg.

"Celtic is a big club, but I have played African Champions League, which also has 60,000-70,000 and I play at a big club here, so playing in Glasgow will not be a problem," he told Rosenborg TV.

"We have won a lot of games recently, this is a 50-50 game and I think we can get a result."
