I was going to bring you the reaction from the Republic camp but somebody has tuned our TVs into some college football between Florida and Vanderbilt, whatever that is.

So we'll call it a night!

    See you soon.

  2. 'We need an upturn quickly'published at 22:04 British Summer Time 16 October 2018

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Wales

More from former Republic of Ireland defender Kenny Cunningham on BBC Radio 5 live:

"My personal opinion is we can get more out of the group. Of course we haven't got a natural goalscorer but there's not going to be another Robbie Keane, so we have to find another solution.

"Sean Maguire is knocking on the door and Callum Robinson has shown up really well and looks like he can play a role for us. But Martin O'Neill has to decide how we are going to play going forward.

"Whether Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane get the opportunity to do that I'm not too sure. I think they still have the backing of John Delaney but we need to see an upturn in performance very quickly."

  4. 'They're a fraction of the team they used to be'published at 22:02 British Summer Time 16 October 2018

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Wales

    Kevin Ratcliffe
Former Wales captain on BBC Radio 5 live

It's a fantastic free kick from Harry Wilson, he's outfoxed the keeper even though he could have done better. We saw him do it against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the cup.

After the goal Ireland weren't anywhere near them, Ireland flew forward and it opened holes for Wales on the counter and they should have took more of their chances and killed it off.

It was a really poor performance from Ireland they're a fraction of the team they used to be.

  5. "I'm so proud"published at 22:01 British Summer Time 16 October 2018

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Wales

Wales manager Ryan Giggs on Sky Sports: "I'm so proud, they dug in right to the end. It was a really brilliant second-half performance.

"The determination pleased me, to not give a goal away. I said on Thursday that we didn't do the basics against Spain but we did today. We were led by the captain. Ashley Williams was outstanding for 90 minutes.

"He defended, did the hard stuff which gave us the platform to go on. Harry Wilson, I fined him for the goal at Old Trafford a few weeks ago, I won't be tonight! He does it all the time in training, it's practice, practice, practice.

"We set out to win the group, it's a tough group and now it is in our hands."

Former Republic of Ireland defender Kenny Cunningham on BBC Radio 5 live: "It'll bring a bit of pressure on to the manager. The level of performance has not been good enough over the last year, you can trace it back to the humiliation against Denmark.

"We haven't been able to turn it around, we haven't been creating enough opportunities, keeping enough clean sheets and we've looked very disjointed.

"Clearly we're lacking confidence, we pressed a little higher up the pitch than we have. We forced a couple of mistakes that we couldn't take advantage of but once Wales got in front they just grew in confidence and they opened us up at will in the end.

"They could have added to the scoreline and made it more comfortable."

  7. 'The manager has confidence in us'published at 21:54 British Summer Time 16 October 2018

Wales goalscorer Harry Wilson on Sky Sports: "We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, we tried to get on the ball and cause problems and we did in the second half.

"It’s always nice to score a free-kick but the pleasing thing was it gave us three points. I hope I can keep scoring.

“The manager is very confident in all of us, you can see that in his selections. Everyone dealt with it really well."

Ridley Rees: Great result. Don't understand #bbcfootball, external negativity. We generally kept the ball and nicked a goal when all the focus was on how many players were missing. Give the young lads a break, they don't need England-style pressure

Wales captain Ashley Williams on Sky Sports: "It feels as good as the win last month, it was a completely different game. The gameplan was to pass the ball again but we knew it would be very difficult and we would have to stand up to an aerial therat.

"We had a young team, it's about them getting on the pitch and getting some minutes, to a man they were brilliant."

I think it's encouraging that Wales can play without Bale and Ramsey, it wasn't a great performance tonight but the young boys stood up to the challenge.

We don't always know when we'll have Bale and Ramsey available for us so the younger lads will have to step up and perform on the big stage.

I still don't think the performance was great and I expected to see a lot more from the team tonight but it's a great result and sets up a mouthwatering tie with Denmark.

  13. 'Zidane wouldn't change that'published at 21:46 British Summer Time 16 October 2018

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Wales

    Andy Townsend
Ex-Chelsea midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

It's inevitable that Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane are going to wake up to calls for their heads. That's just the nature of the beast.

But I didn't think that was the performance of a team not showing commitment to their manager or his staff.

We don't have boys operating at the top end of the field that can make a difference and that is a fact. This current Ireland group is as honest as the day is long but we don't have that quality.

You can bring Zinedine Zidane in but he is not going to change that. We are trying to win games with players that can't make a difference.

You have to say Wales got the job done. It wasn't a fantastic performance. There was nothing in the game but Ireland were probably the better team. What a fantastic goal from Harry Wilson, though.

It was a fantastic free-kick and that's what he gives you. He brings that set-piece ability. You know he's going to hit the target and work the goalkeeper.

Ireland just didn't have that quality in the final third, with Wales hanging on at the end.

This is where Martin O'Neill has taken us - no strikers and no creative midfielders, negative, stifling tactics and formation - he has to go, ideally resign as the FAI won't have the courage to sack him.

It's looking like relegation for the Republic of Ireland then at this rate. Denmark and Wales remain in the hunt for promotion to the A groups.

I think James McClean has to try and fire that back into bodies. It would be a ridiculous strike there from that angle to beat Wayne Hennessey.
