Martin O'Neill knows he needs to get results. There has been a lot of talk about the nature of the performances of late. Yes it's lovely to play sparkling football but for me, with this group of players, it's about results. He is fighting tooth and nail to compete at this level.

I wouldn't worry too much about the manner of a victory, it's about getting over the line.

It is an opportunity for Ireland, we could not be any lower in terms of confidence and general vibe. Someone out their tonight can stick their head above the parapet and be prepared to take a risk.

Wales are missing key players, what a chance for Ireland on their own patch to rise above mediocrity.

Wales without Bale or Ramsey tonight, it will be a huge difference, we have seen in the past when they are not available it's a very different set up.

We tend to struggle to score goals without them. Ryan Giggs will have to come up with a different formula.

  7. Sorry seems to be the hardest word...published at 19:05 British Summer Time 16 October 2018

Republic of Ireland v Wales (19:45 BST)

Harry Arter has said he never needed an apology from assistant manager Roy Keane before returning to the Republic of Ireland squad.

The on-loan Cardiff midfielder, 28, played in Saturday's draw with Denmark after making himself unavailable for last month's fixtures because of a row with Keane in the summer.

The two men have since resolved their differences in a telephone call.

"It was just a chat on the phone with Roy," the Bournemouth player explained.

"But it was a good conversation, obviously, because I came back and that's it."

"The conversation with Roy stays between me and Roy. It was good to speak to him and put things to bed. What was said stays between us.

"I never needed an apology, I never wanted a 'sorry', I never wanted anything like that.

"I wasn't in a position to do that, to be honest with you. It was more just, 'Can we put this to bed for the sake of the team?' more than anyone."

I haven’t known the mood to be this despondent around Irish football for a long time.

The Nations League should be the perfect back-door opportunity for a side like the Republic of Ireland to get into Euro 2020.

But having started with a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Wales last month, Martin O’Neill’s team have been treading water.

They are struggling to score goals, there have been too many stories of disharmony in the camp.

Wales produced an exhibition of sparkling attacking football as they thrashed the Republic of Ireland in their Nations League opener in September to give manager Ryan Giggs a handsome victory in his first competitive match in charge.

Tom Lawrence set the tone with an emphatic sixth-minute finish from Joe Allen's through ball, and Gareth Bale whipped in an even better second goal from the edge of the area after a raking cross-field pass from Ben Davies.

Giggs' rampant young side were 3-0 up before half-time as 17-year-old Ethan Ampadu set up Aaron Ramsey, whose low finish left the Irish looking bewildered at Cardiff City Stadium - a ground where they won a vital World Cup qualifying match less than a year ago.

Connor Roberts got in on the act in the second half with a crisp left-footed strike, before the Republic of Ireland managed a consolation of sorts when substitute Shaun Williams seized on an error by Ramsey to score.

But that did little to undo the carnival atmosphere, as Wales gave a tantalising glimpse of what may be to come from this promising group of emerging talents.

Yes, tonight's Superclasico between two giants of the game takes place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Why?

Well, I'm not suggesting that $£$£$£$£$£$£ may be behind the decision, but the match is part of The Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour.

Wales and the Republic of Ireland are developing quite a rivalry.

Tonight's match will be the fourth meeting in 19 months between the two sides, and it is a fixture which has provided its fair share of acrimony and drama.

The Republic’s Seamus Coleman broke his leg after a dreadful tackle from Neil Taylor in March 2017, while the return fixture seven months later saw Wales’ Joe Allen concussed after a heavy challenge from David Meyler and James McClean.

The Irish won to reach the World Cup play-offs that night - and knock out Wales in the process - but the Welsh got their revenge last month with a comprehensive 4-1 Nations League victory in Cardiff last month.

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill says his team must learn from last month's defeat by Wales as the sides prepare to meet in Dublin.

Republic of Ireland boss Martin O’Neill makes two changes from Saturday’s goalless Nations League draw with Denmark. Callum Robinson and Aiden O'Brien replace Shane Long and the injured Callum O'Dowda.

With several important players such as Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey unavailable, Wales manager Ryan Giggs makes five changes from Thursday’s 4-1 friendly defeat by Spain. There are first senior starts for Leeds’ teenage striker Tyler Roberts and 18-year-old Manchester City midfielder Matt Smith, who is on loan at Twente.

There are also recalls for James Chester, David Brooks and Tom Lawrence. Ramsey misses out after his wife Colleen gave birth to twins, while Ethan Ampadu is injured and Chris Gunter, Declan John and Sam Vokes drop to the bench.

Ireland XI: Randolph; Keogh, Duffy, K. Long; Doherty, Christie, O’Brien, Arter, McClean; Hendrick; Robinson.

Wales XI: Hennessey; C. Roberts, Williams, Chester, Davies; Allen, Smith; Brooks, Wilson, Lawrence; T. Roberts.

Wales manager Ryan Giggs has challenged his side to "prove people wrong" by beating the Republic of Ireland without Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey.

Tonight's match will be Wales' first competitive fixture without their two leading players since Ramsey's debut in 2008.

Wales will also be aiming to win only a fourth competitive match without Bale since his debut in 2006.

"We have to stop that record," said Giggs.

"Prove people wrong if that's the case. Make that record just a bit better.

"Any team's going to miss a player like Gareth but we have to [cope]. It's happened in the past and it's going to happen in the future, when we have to cope without our best players."

When these sides met just a month ago Wales handed out a chastening defeat to the Republic of Ireland. Gareth Bale and co ran riot in fact in a 4-1 thrashing.

But tonight, there is no Bale, or Aaron Ramsey for the visitors. And it is Denmark - the third wheel on this Robin Reliant of a Nations League Group - who are in charge.

Can Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane inspire a much-improved show in Dublin?
