  2. A cold Tuesday night in Kharkiv...published at 19:44 British Summer Time 23 October 2018

Shakhtar Donetsk v Man City (20:00 BST)

Judging by Benjamin Mendy's clothing, things were a touch cold when Manchester City trained at the Metalist Stadium on Monday.

Shakhtar have a fine home record and have won five and drawn one of their last six Champions League games on home soil. Napoli, Feyenord, Manchester City and Roma have all left this stadium with nothing.

This perhaps falls under that 'can you do it on a cold Tuesday night in Kharkiv' cliche.

City could do with a Danny Higginbotham, a Rory Delap and a Mamady Sidibe in their ranks to stand up to the environment.

  4. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 19:43 British Summer Time 23 October 2018

    Young Boys 1-1 Valencia

Sekou Sanogo is an inch from being a hero. He gets up to meet a corner, glances it low at the bottom corner and only a fine fingertip save by Neto in the Valencia goal forces the effort onto the post. It bounces back into Neto's hands.

Valencia can count themselves lucky. We go into four added minutes...

Bayern Munich easing to a 2-0 win at AEK Athens. The pace of the game has dropped markedly.

It is 5,547 days since Cristiano Ronaldo first stepped out on to the Old Trafford turf, when his stepovers made quite a splash during a 30-minute cameo as a substitute against Bolton in August 2003. That buzz of excitement whenever he is on this pitch has lasted 15 years, and counting, because it is the same again tonight.

Ronaldo has played here 142 times in total - 140 of them were for United, bringing him 62 goals that helped to make him a huge crowd favourite - but before tonight he has only been back twice since leaving for Real Madrid in 2009.

He has only been on the opposing side once, when he scored the winner for Real in a Champions League tie in 2013, with his other appearance coming when he went head to head with Lionel Messi in a forgettable international friendly between Portugal and Argentina in 2014.

Tonight’s return comes with Juventus, but he has already received warm applause from the home fans when he emerged to warm up - sprinting out of the tunnel ahead of his team-mates.

The stadium is still pretty empty at the moment but the people selling merchandise outside the ground are definitely pleased to see him back too...

A reminder if you are just joining us, Cristiano Ronaldo starts for Juventus at Old Trafford while Manchester United are unchanged from their draw at Chelsea.

Manchester City have Kevin De Bruyne back in their starting line-up for the first time since his lengthy knee injury.

I've only known two players in Sir Alex Ferguson's time that were given the freedom they were and were allowed to not always track back - and they were Cristiano Ronaldo and Eric Cantona.

Because they were greatness at Manchester United.

All the Juventus fans are in their seats with half an hour to go before kick-off. There are a lot of empty red seats elsewhere. The Manchester United supporters are either taking their time to take their seats or they are stuck in traffic like the United bus was!

Shakhtar have never been beaten at home by an English side in Europe.

That's five wins and two draws so far, so Manchester City could be a first tonight should they land a win in Ukraine.

The home side will be without the sidelined Marlos and Taison tonight too, lending a boost to the English outfit.

A warm welcome, no step-overs round here son.

Steve: I remember when Ronaldo first arrived, he ripped apart Danny Mills at Charlton. Danny took exception & absolutely levelled him later in the game. Yellow & a shrug of the shoulders from Danny. The Premier League definitely toughened Ronaldo up.

Man Utd v Juventus (20:00 BST)

    Phil Neville
Former England & Man Utd defender on BBC Radio 5 live

United will get something out of this game if the fans turn up and turn this into a proper European night atmosphere.

    Teams are intimidated by it.

These are two of the biggest teams in European football.

We used to take lessons from the atmosphere in Turin. The fans and the intimidation can make the difference.

  13. Chances of progressionpublished at 19:31 British Summer Time 23 October 2018

Man Utd v Juventus (20:00 BST)

Simon Gleave, head of sports analysis, Gracenote: "Manchester United's goalless draw against Valencia three weeks ago has reduced the Red Devils' chance of reaching the knockout phase to 75%, approximately the same as it was before the draw was made.

"United's next two matches are against the second best team in Europe, Juventus, according to the Euro Club Index., external

"It will be important for United to get something out of these two matches in order to keep their chance of qualifying high under potential pressure of Valencia's challenge for one of the two spots in the last 16."

We are still waiting for most of the players from both teams to emerge to start their warm-ups. The Juventus goalkeepers are the only ones to be seen at the moment.

Most of the Juve fans are in place, though, and they are already making a lot of noise.

Shakhtar may be located just a corner kick away from the Russian border but they are somewhat indebted to Brazil, just a short 18-hour flight away.

Remarkably, seventeen of Shakhtar's last 19 Champions league goals have been scored by players from South American countries, including 14 from Brazil.

The Brazilians in the squad need to share a few tips with the Ukraine lads around them.

Sitting 14th in La Liga and with just one win in nine games, things don't look as they should at Valencia.

What is superb however is some of the clobber their boss Marcelino throws on for games. I mean check him out on the left here in the skinny pants and crisp white shirt.

Remarkably, his side have drawn seven of their nine league games this season.

And guess what, they're heading for a draw here. They could have been behind had the brilliantly named Moumi Nicolas Ngamaleu got a touch on a ball which dropped his way 10 yards from goal.

Do Manchester CIty have the tools to win the Champions League? Of course they do.

It is their year, they have such strength in depth.
