United played well in the last 10 minutes of the game when they created chances and could have got it back to 2-2.

They improved but Juan Mata just couldn't get a decent touch on the ball in the 90th minute. But on their overall performance they didn't deserve to get a point.

Phil Jones' own-goal was shambolic. There is no hiding it.

Lyon are into the Champions League knockout stages after finishing the group unbeaten.

After beating Manchester City in the opening game, they drew their next five - including this 1-1 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk - to move into the last 16.

Juventus suffered their second defeat of the season, losing 2-1 to Young Boys, but still top the group thanks to Manchester United's loss.

Phil Foden played well but he didn't stand out. I have seen him play better than that, and he will have to play better than that if he wants to push into the team on a regular basis when everyone is fit.

This group stage has been a great argument for drastically restructuring the Champions League. There have been some great games and some upsets, but the 16 teams advancing into the knockouts are exactly the 16 teams everyone would have expected.

City had a chance where they had three attackers on one defender and Hoffenheim were doing it with 25 minutes to go.

It's naive but it heartens you that they will give everything to win. Had David Silva or Kevin de Bruyne been playing tonight it would have been more than 2-1.

That's United's European season over - they've no chance of beating any of the group winners. Glorious chance to win the group tonight with the Juventus result, but Mourinho bottled it even before kick-off with his team selection. Awful.

    Daniel, Hassocks

It's actually quite hard to describe just how awful Utd have been. In truth I should have gave up watching after Phil Jones' coolly incompetent finish, but it has held my gaze like the unfolding of a tragically predictable horror story. I'm unlikely to be so brave when we play Liverpool.

Stephen: I always want United to lose, but it would really be handy tonight. City's second round options already don't look great. Let's not add Juventus to the mix.

The Hoffenheim fans have been fantastic this evening. They have just gone crazy, dancing up and down behind Ederson’s goal. They have certainly enjoyed themselves tonight, despite the result.

If there is any weakness generally at Manchester City, it is at left back. Fabian Delph often gets his angles wrong and people can drift past him.

And a late chance for United! Fine play from Paul Pogba too, the wedge pass over the top catches Valencia square, Juan Mata is in behind and has a swing at it - but it's a swing and a miss. No connection...

Fine play from Reiss Nelson! He gallops clear of Fabian Delph, looks for a team-mate in the middle and his cutback is charged down by Aymeric Laporte.
