    Man City 2-1 Hoffenheim

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 live

It was naive defending again from Hoffenheim. The goalkeeper didn't cover himself in glory diving the wrong way too early.

I think City might just be able to relax now.

  3. Postpublished at 21:25 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Valencia 2-0 Man Utd

Valencia close to a third - Santi Mina was put through on goal after a slip from Phil Jones, but Sergio Romero stands up well to save.

  4. goal

GOAL - Man City 2-1 Hoffenheimpublished at 21:22 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Leroy Sane (61 mins)

Hoffenheim are playing this whole half as if it was stoppage-time - it's madness. Great to watch as a neutral though, they bomb men forwards but they are so vulnerable to the pacy break. Raheem Sterling plays a one-two with Leroy Sane, Sane is clear inside the area and he rattles a shot under/through the keeper.

Reiss Nelson should have scored there. It was a great save from Ederson. That pass cut the City defence open far too easily.

Dusan Tadic has just levelled for Ajax against Bayern Munich. One more goal and the Amsterdam side will win the group ahead of the German champions.

    Man City 1-1 Hoffenheim

Get Hoffenheim into the Premier League. Great to watch. Now they go close, freeing Reiss Nelson galloping up on the right of the area but the Arsenal man can't find a way past Ederson, who saves with his shins.

    Valencia 2-0 Man Utd

Chance for United from a corner, Phil Jones challenges the goalkeeper and Eric Bailly smashes a shot over the top.

Still yet to have a shot on target.

He had to score. There was only one player tracking back for Hoffenheim, Nico Schulz. They just overplay it.

The defending was so naive. That was hilarious.

    Man City 1-1 Hoffenheim

Well, well, well… Pep Guardiola sat down on his bench and buried his head in his hands after City missed that chance. Unbelievable.

  12. How did City miss that?published at 21:19 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Man City 1-1 Hoffenheim

    Chris Bevan
    BBC Sport at Etihad Stadium

Utter disbelief from the City fans in front of me at how they managed to mess that breakaway chance up. Some supporters are still on their feet, long after the resulting corner, struggling to comprehend what they have just seen.

Nabil Fekir thinks he has equalised for Lyon against Shakhtar Donetsk but the offside flag goes up. They need a point to reach the last 16. At the moment the Ukrainians are going through.

  14. HOW?!published at 21:18 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Man City 1-1 Hoffenheim

How have they not scored?! What are Hoffenheim doing?

They leave nobody back from a corner, one pass sends three City players in on goal, from inside their own half! Three against the keeper.

Surely a goal, Raheem Sterling runs it 60 yards, squares it for Leroy Sane, who puts it back to Bernardo Silva, who shoots against the keeper.

    An incredible miss!

  15. CLOSE!published at 21:16 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Man City 1-1 Hoffenheim

This has been a great watch! It's so open now as Hoffenheim are caught on the counter from their own corner, Raheem Sterling finds Gabriel Jesus and his shot from a tight angel squeezes across the goal and away. Good save, actually.

From the corner it's another free header = over from Nicolas Otamendi.

It is stunning to see how bad Hoffenheim's defending is from corner kicks.

I heard some of the City's technical staff talking about it by half time and they can't believe it. You just don't get it in the Premier League.

  17. CLOSE!published at 21:12 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Man City 1-1 Hoffenheim

What a save that is! Ah, it wouldn't have counted as Leroy Sane's corner had already bananaed out of play before coming back in. Aymeric Laporte met it like a steam train, his header was pushed out and Oliver Baumann then brilliantly saved his follow-up.

Sane then crosses dangerously and Raheem Sterling goes close at the back stick. City have started the half very well.

Phil Jones also did so back in November 2011 v Benfica.

  19. 'It couldn't get any worse'published at 21:09 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Valencia 2-0 Man Utd

    John Southall
BBC Radio 5 live football reporter in Valencia

That was the worst possible start to the second half for Manchester United.

Phil Jones was stretching in a race with Michy Batshuayi and he flicked it past Sergio Romero. It couldn't get any worse.

  20. goal

GOAL - Valencia 2-0 Man Utdpublished at 21:07 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Phil Jones (OG 47 mins)

A 20-yard own goal! One of Phil Jones' greatest hits!

He's unlucky, isn't he? He has a bad starting position but reacts well to get across and in front of Michy Batshuayi as the pair chase a through ball, Jones slides in and makes a tackle but Sergio Romero is left in no man's land and the ball pings into the open net.

Jones, on the floor, looks up aghast as the ball betrays him. Classic.
