GOAL - Valencia 2-1 Man Utdpublished at 21:46 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Marcus Rashford (87 mins)

The late rally of sorts has some tangible result! The three subs combine, Jesse Lingard does well to retrieve the ball, a lost cause, he lays it back to Ashley Young, and his left-wing cross is headed home by Marcus Rashford.

Paul: City have been helped by a team that are too open. They'll have be better than tonight if they want win champions league.

It's Dusan Tadic 2-2 Robert Lewandowski. Bayern Munich's Polish striker has just scored his 21st goal of the season and they are set to win Group E above Ajax (again).

  4. CLOSE!published at 21:46 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Man City 2-1 Hoffenheim

When Raheem Sterling can finish he'll be some player...

I jest, of course! But that is some miss. Great ball in by Phil Foden, Sterling is free about six yards out and he puts a cushioned volley just wide of the far post.

City send on Vincent Kompany for the closing stages.

Paul Pogba from a mile out, good save! Good hit that time, had Jaume Domenech sprawling.

Ajax are eight minutes away from winning Group E after Dusan Tadic scored a penalty to put them 2-1 up against Bayern Munich - his second goal of the game. Who at Southampton sanctioned that sale, in retrospect?!

Paulo Dybala has pulled one back for Juventus, but they still trail 2-1 to Young Boys.

Manchester United are finally having a concerted go - first Paul Pogba carries the ball a long wany and curls a shot straight at the keeper, before Marcus Rashford flicks a header wide.

The best thing for Manchester City now is they will get a break. So they will get their big players back.

They will need the Silvas, the De Bruynes and the Mendys if they are going to win the Champions League.

  9. GREAT SAVE!published at 21:38 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Man City 2-1 Hoffenheim

Lovely effort! A long, deep cross picks out Phil Foden on the left of the area, he waits for it to drop perfectly and smashes in a volley and it's heading for the roof of the net until Olivier Baumann gets a touch on it.

    Fine save!

I can report that Pep Guardiola is finally happy. The City coach has finally sat down after spending the majority of the evening prowling the edge of his technical area.

With 15 minutes to go Manchester City are winning their group, and Manchester United are not. They are coming second.

Leroy Sane has really stood out in the second half. He has been superb for Manchester City.

If Manchester City play an open game against just about any team they will usually win because they have more good players than virtually anyone else.

But they have been pushed all the way in this one.

Juventus are now 2-0 down to Young Boys, with Guillaume Hoarau, who won five caps for France in 2010 and 2011, scoring his second goal of the game.

As things stand Juve will still top the group thanks to Manchester United's struggles.

It's 10-a-side between Ajax and Bayern Munich. Thomas Muller has been sent off, with Maximilian Wober shown an earlier red for the Dutch side. It's still 1-1.

A long-ranger from sub Marcus Rashford is never going to trouble Jaume Domenech in the Valencia goal but it is, with 16 minutes left, their first shot on target.

Lovley strike of the ball from the edge of the area - Reiss Nelson finds Joelinton and he bends a rising strike about two yards too high.

Phil Foden has a ping at the other end but puts it over. End to end, like a basketball game!

Romelu Lukaku is off with 20 to go - the Belgian had just 35 touches and no shots.

There's been a goal in Kiev and it's a HUGE one. Nabil Fekir has just curled a beauty into the top corner from the edge of the box to make it Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 Lyon.

That would take the French side into the last 16 and see the Ukrainians drop into the Europa League.

If everyone had taken their chances here tonight it might have been 200 - 117. OK fair enough that might be a slight exaggeration. It's been that type of game though.

  19. Sane still hungry for goalspublished at 21:29 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

Leroy Sane was so good in City's last home game, their win against Watford at the start of December, that Pep Guardiola said afterwards that he would ask the German winger what he ate for his pre-match meal and put it on the menu for everyone else.

Whatever Sane has been snacking on lately, it looks like he is hungry for goals - his double tonight makes it nine in his past 10 matches for club and country.

The City fans want to keep feeding him too - they were chanting for him to take that last free-kick before Gabriel Jesus swung it over the bar.

'How poor has Lukaku been tonight?' says a colleague to my left.

You could substitute Lukaku's name for pretty much every man in red. Not a vintage display.
