  2. 'Pogba needs to show a reaction'published at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Valencia 0-0 Man Utd

Former Man Utd midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

I'd be saying to Paul Pogba, 'You are not in at the moment and there's a reason why. The lads have done well. when you get the chance to play go and show you are the best player and dominate a game from start to finish'.

Let's see him do it for a season week in week out and he's got a chance tonight to get himself in the team for the weekend.

I do think he can try too hard. He tries the hard pass, a skill, yes he can sometimes do it in the wrong areas which is a little naive and something he needs to grow out of but he's a fantastic player and a match-winner.

Body language is a massive thing and he has that languid style that reflects poorly. And there are times when his reaction to losing the ball isn't fantastic.

People don't like you losing the ball but he needs to show that reaction and that little bit of aggression to get it back.

Man City v Hoffenheim (20:00 GMT)

City can't kick-off until the game in Ukraine does - that game is a bit late getting underway because of that insane weather which means a long wait for the players in the Etihad tunnel. Here they come though.

We'll be a few minutes late getting under way. City will seal top spot in Group F with a draw.

  6. 'A chance to get confidence back'published at 19:54 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

Valencia v Man Utd (20:00 GMT)

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, speaking to BT Sport:

"I don't believe that Juventus won't win but I have to believe that in spite of many changes we make, people will try to motivate themselves, play a good game and get a positive result.

"The majority of players who are playing are the ones without many minutes, they need to play, to put themselves available for the team when the team needs them.

"Sergio Romero for example, normally he is waiting for cup matches to play, now he has a chance to play in the Champions League, Andreas Pereira, there are two kids on the bench, it's a good opportunity for them.

"For people like Paul (Pogba) and (Romelu) Lukaku, to get their confidence levels back, like Lukaku did in the last match where he scored at Old Trafford."

When Phil Foden signed a new six-year contract with Manchester City last week, some observers questioned how much game-time he would get between now and 2024.

The 18-year-old academy product, City’s great home hope who is also known as 'the Stockport Iniesta', has made only three starts before tonight this season, but he will get his chance to shine against Hoffenheim.

Foden has already notched the first senior goal of his career on one of those starts, against Oxford in the Carabao Cup in September, so will a first European goal follow tonight?

He will probably just be hoping for a better outcome than his previous two starts in this competition, against Basel and Shakhtar last season - City lost both matches, albeit they were both dead rubbers.

  8. FULL-TIMEpublished at 19:47 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Real Madrid 0-3 CSKA Moscow

There we go - a famous win for CSKA! That's Real Madrid's heaviest ever home defeat in Europe.

    And CSKA still finish bottom.

There is not loads to play for in the 20:00 GMT kick-offs.

The most important game is Shakhtar Donetsk v Lyon with the winner joining Manchester City in the last 16. A draw takes the French club through.

Shakhtar could end up out of Europe entirely if they lose and Hoffenheim beat City to finish third.

Ajax v Bayern Munich is a battle for top spot in Group E, with the German side just needing a draw. Both those sides have progressed already.

Benfica v AEK Athens is a total dead rubber, except for the Greek side having the chance to pick up their first and only point(s).

Juventus will top Group H if they beat Young Boys in Switzerland. Anything else opens the door for Manchester United to overtake them.

  13. Who's already through?published at 19:34 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

Here's 15 of the last 16 of the Champions League:

Ajax, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Paris St-Germain, Porto, Real Madrid, Roma, Schalke, Tottenham.

The only place up for grabs will go to either Lyon or Shakhtar.

Manchester City do not have to 'bounce back' from defeat very often - which is maybe why their manager Pep Guardiola does not seem too bothered after suffering their first Premier League loss of the season at Chelsea on Sunday.

"The aim is to be champions at the end of the season, not to be invincible," Pep writes in his programme notes tonight. "We never speak about these things. I don't, the players don't and the club doesn't."

Another reason might be the way City responded the last time they lost, against Lyon in their opening game in Group F in September. They won 14 of their next 16 matches.

  15. Postpublished at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

    Real Madrid 0-3 CSKA Moscow

CSKA have gone three up! A big win on the cards for the Russians, who are still in the hunt for a Europa League place. At the moment they are going to finish bottom of the group though...

Gabriel Jesus had a tough World Cup as well leading the line for Brazil. It placed a lot of scrutiny on him and I think he has felt that. There was a time a year or so ago when he was pushing Sergio Aguero to be the main man.

    Real Madrid 0-2 CSKA Moscow

Real Madrid had already won their group and haven't got a full strength XI out tonight but still, this would be a shock.

Gareth Bale came on at half time and looks to have picked up a knock. He's not moving well. Twenty minutes left.

Andreas Pereira did well when he went away with Manchester United in pre-season. He played in front of the back four almost as a playmaker because he is not a natural defensive midfielder.

It wouldn't be a surprise to see him dovetail with Paul Pogba on the left because that is where he is at his best.

  19. 'City missing key men'published at 19:15 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2018

Man City v Hoffenheim (20:00 GMT)

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

There is a certain number of players you can do without, then it does become a problem and you can start to see a few weaknesses.

That said, playing against Hoffenheim Manchester City still should be good enough. They can do without certain players but not the ones that make things happen. David Silva, Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero are world class and you will miss them.

If they were facing this game tonight needing the three points to get through it would be a concern.
