Newport County are so much better than Schalke you know.

    Reggie Keepin, Newport

Just how poor are Schalke, this is already another meaningless tie. City's luck with cup draws this season has been unreal (Atletico Madrid v Juventus, now that's a tie), but this is a shambles.

Time stands still when the VAR is being consulted for an away goal. It was strange to watch everyone just standing around. I imagine it would have been very different had the goal been chalked off, but I don't think the home fans thought it would be.

Excellent use of VAR. It was never a penalty and the decision is overturned. Atleti get a free-kick outside the area instead. Not sure it was even a foul to be honest.

    He never touched him! Surely?

Diego Costa is touched on the shoulder outside the area and then he falls over about six yards later. Penalty given. Hang on...

Goonerama: What's German for "play to the whistle"?

Paul: Schalke player down injured yet Schalke carry on playing. Soon as they lose the ball and City score they then start moaning. Should have put it out of play themselves if they were that bothered about the player who was down. Embarrassing.

Josh Earl: The one thing this City team do not need is a helping hand. That's exactly what Schalke have given them. Credit where it's due though, excellent anticipation and opportunism by the wonderful David Silva.

You have to say, the goal had been coming. And it was sloppy by Schalke. Their concentration was on a possible foul about 60 yards from their goal

When Laporte was fouled earlier on he jumped up immediately, got on with the game and let the referee make the decision.

If only Mark Uth had done that for Schalke, the rest of the team might have had a bit more concentration and they might not have conceded that goal.

And there it is - a threat from Schalke. It comes from a mistake from Ilkay Gundogan, playing a blind pass and Mark Uth can run at the City defence. He's up on his own though, behind enemy lines and he has to engineer a shooting chance, bending a shot wide from 25 yards.

Schalke have to change their gameplan, surely. They are a goal down, an away goal too. And they are still basically putting nine men behind the ball.

Easily said than done of course but they have to have some sort of threat.

City could have a second as David Silva finds Raheem Sterling inside the area but he doesn't get a shot away...

Dennis Ethan: Atletico Madrid and Schalke to win tonight! You heard it here first.

Femi: It’s going to be a very tough night for the referee in the Atletico Madrid v Juventus tie. Lots of handbags already inside 10 minutes.

Jonathan: The Schalke groundstaff need to look for new jobs down the allotments if you ask me. Pitch is appalling.

    Sergio Aguero

    The goal stands!

A Schalke shambles. They want a foul as Aymeric Laporte wins a header on the halfway line but a), it wasn't a foul and b) it doesn't even lead to the goal.

Schalke have the ball back, play it to keper Ralf Fahrmann, who passes it out to Salif Sane on the edge of the area. He is caught napping, David Silva runs past him to intercept and square it for a tap-in for Sergio Aguero.

An easy goal. Embarrassing defending really at this level.

They can't get out though. Sergio Aguero takes the ball on inside the area and has a shot charged away for yet another corner.
