  1. Schalke defence has past formpublished at 21:03 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2019

Man City 3-0 Schalke (agg: 6-2)

    Chris Bevan

Schalke's goals-against record in their past four games reads 3-3-4-4, and on this evidence you can see why. If this game follows that recent pattern then City will get five tonight, and I think they will probably be disappointed if they don't.

Still, at least the German side's fans have performed well. They reacted to each City goal by bouncing up and down in unison - all three tiers of them - and they did not stop singing throughout the first half.

So far, they have been rewarded by seeing their team manage the grand total of one shot (off target) and zero touches inside the City area. Something to aim for in the second half then...

Will Nicholls: Can’t help but feel that VAR is being overused here, it’s like a child with a brand new toy. All they want to do is play with it all the time. It’s slowing the pace of the game down because it’s being used in situations it really doesn’t need to be used in.

Bibz: There is always going to be teething issues with VAR as everyone involved has to go through a steep learning curve and the technology will be tweaked as we go on, eventually it will become a really useful tool so we all need to be patient with it.

Manchester City have won the game. At times Schalke frustrated Manchester City in the opening 20 minutes, but once City got the first goal the floodgates opened.

City have to make a statement in this second half and Pep would want to win six or seven and if you win 7-0 it makes people's eyes open.

Schalke are miles away from being good enough at this level. Manchester City are cruising and not having to try very hard.

    Superb football from Man City.

Raheem Sterling plays a quick one-two with Danilo, but on this occasion the Englishman's shot is blocked between the legs of Ralf Fahrmann.

    Nearly sneaked in.

Michael Reid: I could have made a cup of tea by the time VAR made that decision. Nowhere near ready for the Premier League next season.

Rhys Barker: The referee looked confident in both decisions for the City goals. So is VAR telling him to wait? The ref should be in total charge. I like VAR the concept but I don't want to see every decision rely on it.

It was a beautiful ball inside the full-back and we know Leroy Sane has phenomenal pace.

Schalke's backline is a joke, their defence is a shambles and you can see why they are conceding shed-loads of goals and it looks as if they have never played together.

    Leroy Sane

    ANOTHER!

Three goals in the space of eight minutes for City and they are now coasting.

Leroy Sane in acres of space at the back post, takes a touch and he slots in a low finish into the far corner against his old club.

The German celebrates, but not that wildly.

They are not the quickest at this VAR yet. It shouldn't take as long and if they get the people who have been doing this for years then they could do it quickly.

You need to get operators who are used to the equipment and doing it quickly.

Raheem Sterling got to the byeline, everyone was expecting a cutback but he produced a beautiful backheel straight into the path of Sergio Aguero. Lovely, little ball and Aguero still had a lot to do.

    Sergio Aguero

    That's that then.

City put the game to tie to bed.

Ilkay Gundogan plays a delightful, lofted pass to Raheem Sterling and the Englishman shows superb awareness to backheel the pass into the feet of Sergio Aguero.

The Argentine holds off Jeffrey Bruma and slots a finish in between the legs of Ralf Fahrmann and into the net.
