  • Spurs go above Man City into second

  1. Moving second and moving on...published at 14:28 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2019

    Tottenham 1-0 Newcastle

    So Tottenham get it done.

Newcastle and their travelling fans will be absolutely gutted as they did so much right defensively but all it takes is one error to undo the lot.

Spurs are now 29 matches without a draw - that's a new Premier League record.

They'll care little for such a mark but they'll care a great deal for the fact they are now four points behind leaders Liverpool.

That's it from me but I'd recommend you join the live text covering all the afternoon games. That's available by clicking here.

Thanks so much for your company, tweets and texts. Have a top afternoon.

  2. 'One mistake the difference'published at 14:25 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2019

They have ridden their luck Newcastle but so have Tottenham, and that one individual mistake will be the difference.

They looked the brighter side, more composed with greater belief in how they go about their business. A good all round display from Newcastle who did threaten, but you cannot have those kind of errors as a goalkeeper.

Tottenham get it done. Hats off to them, they stuck at the task against a side defending for their lives throughout.

It's nine goals in 10 Tottenham games for Son and they move second in the table.

Newcastle not really pushing in any way as Spurs keep the ball. They are two minutes from second in the table.

Tottenham have the ball where they want it as they win a corner with Jamaal Lascelles slicing a clearance behind. Four added minutes.

  11. Postpublished at 86 mins

    Tottenham 1-0 Newcastle

Spurs should be 2-0 up as a mix up at the back gives Fernando Llorente a sight of goal. The net is unguarded but there are bodies in his way and he dribbles a weak shot wide.

  12. 'Awful, awful error'published at 14:10 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2019

    Tottenham 1-0 Newcastle

It's awful for Dubravka and Newcastle, terrible goalkeeping, but Llorente chests the ball down, and the Newcastle players are sucked in far too easily. It's almost straight down the goalkeeper's throat. Awful, awful error.

  13. goal

GOAL - Tottenham 1-0 Newcastlepublished at 83 mins

    Son Heung-min

    Breakthrough.

Poor old Newcastle, poor old Martin Dubravka.

This one is on him as a Fernando Llorente header is collected by Son Heung-min some 20 yards out. He shapes, finds space and hits with power. It's low, dipping and goes straight through the keeper.

An error, no doubt about it, and Son races to the corner flag to celebrate.

    Tottenham are moving into second.

  14. CLOSE!published at 80 mins

    Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle

Somehow Newcastle are level as a corner gets headed into their six-yard box, is flicked on by one of the countless Spurs shirts and it's Matt Ritchie heading off the line to deny Christian Eriksen.

  15. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 78 mins

    Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle

Danny Rose enters, Jan Verthongen leaves. I'm surprised that wasn't done earlier as Rose is more natural in an attacking sense and let's be fair, Verthongen has hardly had to defend at left back.

    Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle

We enter the last 15 minutes. Can Tottenham find that moment to move second in the table?

In comes yet another Jan Verthongen cross... booted clear and Salomon Rondon wins a free-kick to take the pressure off. He's been a warrior out there.

Brilliant tackle by Jamaal Lascelles in the area just as Fernando Llorente got into a decent position.

  19. 'Pretty simple chance'published at 13:59 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2019

    Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle

    Efan Ekoku

He was in the sun and he is looking up straight away to suggest he lost the flight of the ball. It's a great run from Llorente and for a powerful header of the ball like him, that is a pretty simple chance.

    Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle

Tottenham inject a bit of pace into an attack and they flow forward but Kieran Trippier's cross is well read and well held by Martin Dubravka.

They survive a counter attack as Hugo Lloris races out of his box to intercept a through ball and so again they come forward. It's end-to-end suddenly.

Another ball in, a header from Fernando Llorente goes over and he seems to suggest he lost the ball in the glare of the sun over Wembley.
