More warm applause for Allan McGregor as the keeper comes racing out to slide and push the ball away from the feet of Toko Ekambi.

The Cameroon international will be wondering what he has to do to get the better of the Rangers goalie.

Steven Gerrrard will be pleased to get in at half time without having conceded. It could have been an awful lot worse when you consider the opportunities. Again it reiterates the importance of Alan McGregor with those two one-on-one saves. It’s going to be difficult this second half but Rangers have proven themselves when they’ve gone down to 10 men to be a team that deal with that and deal with that well.

  8. Celtic fans 'can push us over the line' - Rodgerspublished at 21:01 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2018

    FT: Rosenborg 0-1 Celtic

Celtic may only need a point from their final Europa League group game at home to RB Salzburg to qualify after their 1-0 win in Rosenborg earlier, but manager Brendan Rodgers insists they will set out to win the game at Parkhead on 13 December.

"It is very hard to just play for a point and a draw," he said. "We will be playing against a good side but we want to go and win the game and use the whole Celtic Park experience and atmosphere to push us over the line.

"It will be a fantastic demonstration of the Celtic support what that synergy between them and the team is all about.

"It has been a great learning campaign for us again. We knew we had to win here and to see the players under that pressure and play with that level of control was very pleasing. That, along with the result, makes it a very good night for us."

Rodgers said he thinks right-back Mikael Lustig, who came off with a dead leg, and winger James Forrest, who required treatment for a knock and was substituted in the second half, "will be fine" for Sunday's League Cup final against Aberdeen.

  9. McGregor proves his worth - againpublished at 20:59 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2018

    HT: Rangers 0-0 Villarreal

It's been fast, it's been furious and Allan McGregor has made two top drawer saves.

The second stop was incredible. Toko Ekambi must have thought he'd scored as he lifted his shot over the diving keeper but the Scotland international displayed great reflexes to throw up a hand in time.

The return of McGregor must be the best bit of business done by manager Steven Gerrard this summer.

It was a harsh second yellow card and certainly not what Rangers need. Now the defending going to be a lot harder for them.

  13. RED CARD Candeias (Rangers)published at 44 mins

    Rangers 0-0 Villarreal

Oh dear... Daniel Candeias is sent packing after a second booking.

There are three Rangers players hounding a man in yellow near the touchline. It looks like the flag is up for a foul by Alfredo Morelos before Candeias clumsily clatters in from the back.

The ref is all over the place as he consults with his fellow official and eventually flashes the red card.

Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier are both claiming the foul - but it's too late for that.

  14. GREAT SAVE!published at 43 mins

    Rangers 0-0 Villarreal

Amazing from Allan McGregor. Absolutely amazing. The Rangers goalie keeps his team in it as he somehow gets a hand up to beat away a shot from Toko Ekambi after a terrible pass from Jon Flanagan had put the home defence in all sorts of bother.

What a chance! The Rangers centre-halves combine in the opposition box as Joe Worrall does well to nod the ball down for Connor Goldson, who can only slash a hurried shot over the top.

Maybe the best chance so far? Carlos Bacca does well to shrug off Joe Worrall and pulls the ball back from the byline for Toko Ekambi, who just drifted away from Jon Flanagan. The Villarreal forward has a good glimpse of goal from near the angle of the six yard box but sclaffs it wide.
