Eros Grezda was the only Rangers player out warming up at the interval, though I can’t blame the others for staying indoors for a heat. But it would appear the Albanian winger could be introduced reasonably early in this half.

Rangers need a goal from somewhere, so when do they start going for broke? It won't be kitchen sink time for a while yet but they really can't afford to concede. Concentration is key.

It's now 2-0 to Villarreal against Spartak Moscow over in Spain but that game has no bearing on Rangers.

Quality-wise, this is as poor a spectacle as I’ve seen at this level for many a year. In fairness to the players, I’d put much of that down to the playing surface. Having said that, Rangers have had the better of any decent attacking play we have seen and in the shape of Connor Goldson’s header off the bar, have come very close to scoring.

As expected, left-back Kieran Tierney returns from a hamstring problem, replacing Emilio Izaguirre. That's the only change from Saturday's 5-1 win over Kilmarnock, which means club captain Scott Brown is once again among the substitutes.

The best chance of the game - make that the only chance - fell to Connor Goldson, with the big defender's powerful header crashing against the crossbar.

The Rangers free-kick for the foul on Middleton is disappointing and there is further frustration as Ryan Jack is penalised for leaving something on a defender making a clearance up the park.

Glenn Middleton is the danger man for Rangers and full-back Mert Muldur can't handle the winger as he is cautioned for tugging him to the deck near the box.

This time Glenn Middleton is spotted in a good advanced position but the Rangers winger takes a clumsy touch as he enters the penalty area from the left and the ball gets away from him.

A dreadful clearance gifts Rangers a corner. Borna Barisic clips the ball into the mixer but it's headed clear by the home defence and Steven Gerrard's men find themselves haring back to make sure Rapid can't spring any nasty surprises.

Glenn Middleton is finding space on both wings but, so far, his Rangers team-mates have not been able to find the speedy teenager with a telling pass.

It’s very tentative from both sides, partly perhaps because of what’s at stake but certainly partly because of the condition of the pitch. Players are visibly unsure of their footing on the surface and as a result are misplacing passes or at best playing the percentages and keeping it very safe.

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos takes a sore one on the shin as a stumbling Andrei Ivan lunges over the ball in a mis-timed challenge.

A free kick to the home side now but Thomas Murg's effort flies well wide.
