The Glasgow duo are back in action on Sunday, with Celtic travelling to Easter Road for a lunchtime kick-off and Rangers welcoming Hamilton Accies to Ibrox later in the day.

Both sides might be patched up after a bruising night.

Celtic are currently two points ahead of Rangers and the Premiership leaders have a game in hand.

Celtic may be in trouble with Uefa since it looked like a Salzburg player was struck by an object thrown from the crowd in the wake of the visitors' first goal.

Ryan Christie has been on cloud nine of late, becoming an integral part of the Celtic midfield, earning a new deal and impressing for Scotland.

He looked in real pain as he was stretchered off in the second half after making a brave, blocking tackle.

The 23-year-old was on crutches at full time and will be assessed later on.

"It would be really disappointing if he was out for a period of time because he has been brilliant," said manager Brendan Rodgers.

Mikael Lustig had to go off early in the first half after a nasty head knock.

So, one Scottish team is still standing in Europe as Celtic made it through on a topsy turvy night.

The players' celebrations were rather muted after losing at home to Salzburg but the fans had a great time celebrating the unexpected Rosenborg equaliser away to RB Leipzig, which allowed their team to progress.

Rangers needed a win in Vienna but were undone by a late goal from Rapid as they were pushing bodies forward.

There will be disappointment at Ibrox since they had four points after the first two games but could only add two more over the next four outings.

However, it was a good ride for a team that started in the first round of qualifying.

A bit more from the Celtic manager, who tells BT Sport: "We were hanging in there. Craig (Gordon) made some great saves in the first half. We were poor on the ball and technically we were not very good at all.

"We need to look at that, because if we're going to play at this level we have to be able to do it - and we've shown that we can - but tonight wasn't so good, I thought we looked a little bit leggy.

"We're also a team that we need our best players available to have any chance at this level, and obviously we had a number who weren't.

"But it takes nothing away - we did it over the six games and we qualified. It's a great feeling."

Brendan Rodgers was unhappy with Celtic's performance on the night - but also praised his side for earning enough points to qualify.

He told BT Sport: "It was very frustrating - we didn't play well at all. They were a team that pressed the game well, but we didn't build the game well enough from the back.

"You've got to be able to play through that pressure. We had too many touches in midfield and we lacked quality. From a performance perspective I was disappointed.

"But you obviously have to congratulate them because they're a good side - you can see they spent their money very well. They've got lots of good young players, and they're a very good side - which is why they reached the semi-final last year.

"There will be things from a performance perspective that we can go away and look at. But the campaign ended tonight in terms of the qualification and we're through which is an absolutely huge effort from everyone."

Craig Gordon was in a grateful mood at full-time when he was asked about his howler for Salzburg’s second goal.

“That hardly ever happens,” the Celtic goalkeeper told BT Sport. "I think I’ve only ever seen that happen once before.

"He’s [Fredrik Gulbrandsen] just followed his run when normally they turn around and go back.

"He’s blocked the throw and scored. It was very unusual to concede a goal like that. I’m annoyed about it, but that sometimes happens in football.

"Overall, I thought I had a fairly good game, but that moment is a little bit of a blow.

"But sometimes these things happen. I’m just ever so grateful that it hasn’t cost us going through.”

What a rollercoaster of a night for Celtic.

Rosenborg have become familiar foes for Celtic in recent years - tonight they went from foe to friend by doing the Scottish champions a huge favour.

It was a grim night for Celtic before the news filtered through from Germany that the Norwegians had equalised.

Salzburg were excellent and had the better of Celtic, of that there is no doubt.

Add in the Lustig and Christie injuries, plus the Craig Gordon howler, it had looked pretty awful.

But then, suddenly, joy at the end for Celtic. Football can certainly play with the emotions and Celtic fans have had quite a ride tonight.

The draw for the last 32 in the Europa League will be on 17 December in Nyon, Switzerland at 12:00 GMT.

The 12 group winners, plus the four best third-placed teams from the Champions League, are the seeded teams.

The runners-up and remaining Champions League sides are the unseeded teams.

Teams from the same group or same country cannot be drawn together.

The first legs will be played on 14 February before the second leg a week later.

So who could Celtic face next? They will be unseeded for the last 32 and there are a few tasty teams in the other pot, including Chelsea, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Napoli, Valencia and Seville.

There can't have been too many home defeats for Celtic celebrated like this.

Salzburg were streets ahead of the Scottish champions for long spells and deservedly make it six wins from six to top Group B.

However, the gloom in Glasgow turned to delight when news of an unlikely equaliser for Rosenborg filtered through.

The Norwegians had nothing to play for and had no points from their first five games.

Funny old game, right enough...

That's it... Celtic are through thanks to that late Rosenborg leveller in Germany.

Filip Benkovic is upended and Celtic have a penalty. The big defender has been a real handful up front in these last few minutes.

A massive cheer ripples round the ground. Rosenborg have definitely not scored another and that other game is still going on, so maybe it's a bit premature.
