Jeet Padaruth: Italy clearly got screwed out of a legitimate goal by VAR. Those lines were clearly wrong and the attacker was onside.

  2. goal

    Sam Kerr

Sam Kerr's spot kick isn't a great one and Italy keeper Laura Giuliani gets a strong hand on it to make the save.

Unfortunately for her, it rebounds straight back out to Kerr, who can slot it into an empty net before running away with her arms stretched out in celebration.

Honduran referee Melissa Borjas didn't hesitate at all.

  4. PENALTY - Australiapublished at 12:20 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    Australia 0-0 Italy

    Captain on captain.

Sam Kerr goes over and Sara Gama is penalised. Bit of a soft one but the Italian skipper had her arms over Kerr.

She gets a yellow for it too.

  5. CLOSE!published at 20 mins

    Australia 0-0 Italy

Oh! This could have gone anywhere! The free-kick is cleared but only as far as midfielder Emily van Egmond.

She drills a long-range strike back through a crowd of players in the box and it bounces off Caitlin Foord and rolls dangerously past the left post.

Italy head coach Milena Bertolini is stood right on the edge of her technical area, tapping her chin, with her eyes glued on the ball.

The 52-year-old has previously enjoyed loads of success managing at club level, including guiding Brescia to two recent Serie A titles, in 2014 and 2016.

    Australia 0-0 Italy

Hayley Raso and Alia Guagni are in a tussle in the right corner but the Australian winger gets the free-kick.

It looks like she kicked the Italian, but the referee thinks otherwise. They can whip a ball in now.

  8. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Australia 0-0 Italy

Lydia Williams is being made to work a little in the Australia net. She just about handles two awkward crosses, each from the right wing, under pressure from several Italian attackers.

I can't call this at the moment. Exciting match!

X: VAR is going to force a rule change on offsides. Goals being disallowed because of an offside shoulder is a complete farce.

Italy are getting chances. Alia Guagni is invited to shoot from distance and she does. She catches it nicely but it's always going wide of the keeper's right post.

    No danger there.

    Australia 0-0 Italy

Australia get the ball rolling straight away and Sam Kerr stretches her legs and goes for a sprint down the left.

She cuts it back into the centre but it's behind her teammates and Italy can clear.

  12. Postpublished at 12 mins

The replay shows it was the swinging left arm of Barbara Bonansea that was offside. Inches!

  13. NO GOALpublished at 12 mins

    Australia 0-0 Italy

A lengthy VAR check but the referee signals for offside. NO GOAL. Drama already.

What strength from Barbara Bonansea to hold off Steph Catley, stay on her feet and tuck the ball in to the net.

But we think she might have been JUST offside.

  15. VAR check...published at 12:10 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    Australia 0-0 Italy

They are not sure about this... VAR check it is! It looks pretty tight.

  16. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 9 mins

    Australia 0-0 Italy

Barbara Bonansea is played in by a beautiful through ball, she holds off the challenges of two defenders, bundles her way into the box and manages to squeeze it into the back of the net.

The flag goes up as celebrations erupt around the stadium - it's been ruled out! The Italy players can't believe it.

Niamh J: Men's international break plus the Women's World Cup with three matches a day! What more could you want to start off the summer?

  18. CLOSE!published at 6 mins

    Australia 0-0 Italy

This is end-to-end stuff. Italy use the space down the right to carve open the defence but Cristiana Girelli's shot, from a tight angle in the box, is comfortably saved by Australian keeper Lydia Williams.

The two ends behind the goals are both almost full now. The largest and most colourful cluster of Australia fans is up the top tier, above the corner flag that their right-back Ellie Carpenter is defending in this first half.

But it's clear from the noise that went up when Sam Kerr went close just then that there are Aussies all around the stadium, and I think there are slightly more of them than there are Italians, despite having so much further to travel.

  20. CLOSE!published at 3 mins

    Australia 0-0 Italy

Oh but this time she wasn't!

Sam Kerr gets a yard on Italy captain Sara Gama and it's the same swinging ball in from the left which this time, she connects with cleanly.

Her header flies inches over the bar. Great start!
