The performance first half was nowhere near good enough. We do need to remember England are third ranked in the world and a big force here. 2-1 is not an embarrassing result, though it could have been if they continued to play as they had done in the first half. But I think the players will be pleased with their second-half performance and there's a lot they can take into their next game.

This morning, Italy came from a goal down to shock Australia in their opening Group C game, before Brazil striker Cristiane became the oldest person to score a World Cup hat-trick in the other Group C game against Jamaica. That gave Brazil a comfortable 3-0 win.

And of course, England - thanks to goals from Ellen White and Nikita Parris - then secured that rather nervy 2-1 victory over Scotland. Make sure you check out Alistair Magowan's report on that match.

Former Scotland goalkeeper Gemma Fay: "I watched France on the opening night and now I've watched England here. If I'm from France or the USA, I'm not particularly worried at this point.

"We talked about standards in the first half. I don't think that standard in the first half was good enough for England."

Nikita Parris' opening goal in this match was her 13th for England during her career, but the first from a penalty kick.

Ellen White has scored a goal in each of her last three international appearances for England against Scotland.

Karen Carney won her 141st cap for England in this match, overtaking Alex Scott’s total of 140 caps for England Women. As a result, only Fara Williams (170) has more caps for England Women now.

Both Jill Scott and Karen Carney appeared in their fourth FIFA Women's World Cup for England - more than any other players in the history of the competition for the Lionesses.

We praised Lucy Bronze and Nikita Parris, this right-hand side of England is such a strength. But going forward, teams will watch this and nullify that area, so what else are we creating through the middle, with Jill Scott and our link-up play? I think we need different options.

I do hope Scotland take this second-half performance and believe in themselves. They can take the game to Japan. Japan are not really a team that's physical but Scotland are - and they have the players, like Kim Little, Erin Cuthbert and Caroline Weir that can play.

Mike Gee: Scotland can feel rightfully hard done by there, England squandered plenty of possession and chances but the difference was two-fold: Lee Alexander between the sticks for Scotland and that penalty decision.

"That first half's done, we're no longer debutants at the World Cup, now we can go on and play the football. We came out in the second half and were a lot braver.

"I don't know what Kirsty Smith drank at half-time but when she came on she ran down that left wing and ignited some energy into the team. Claire Emslie did the same on the other side. They weren't afraid anymore, they believed in their ability and it made a difference."

"We knew Scotland would come out fighting and I hope they do well in the tournament.

"The crowd were shouting VAR, VAR, you just have to stay composed in the moment. We have six games to go, we want to get to that final."

England boss Phil Neville speaking to BBC: "I was pleased with the result. The first game is always the most difficult. We set standards and the players have to keep meeting them.

"We cannot drop below those standards and if we do, we get performances like that second half. We have to be relentless.

"We want to be here for the next 27 days. I'm the biggest problem, I have to keep delivering those standards. It starts with me, we should have done better.

"The only concern I had was that I wanted us to pass the ball. At 2-0 we thought it was going to be easy in the second half, it was a lesson that every game is going to be hard."

Scotland did so well in the second half but, for me, I have question marks over how tired England looked. It was a sloppy pass by Steph Houghton [for Scotland's goal] but it was a running theme. I think Fran Kirby gave the ball away a number of times, we were sloppy in attack.

This is the first time we've gone into a tournament on the back of a winter league. The league was changed - the WSL - and it's all about being fresh going into World Cups and Euros, but this team looked tired.
