  1. 'We ran them close'published at 19:02 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    England 2-1 Scotland

Scotland boss Shelley Kerr speaking to BBC One: "England are tipped to win the tournament and we ran them close. I have to give England credit, they put us under pressure and played with intensity in the first half. Second half we showed what we are capable of.

"I don't want to comment about VAR, the officials have a very difficult job. What I want to do is applaud the players for their second-half performance. We know we have to win one game in the group, it didn't have to be the first game.

"We can take lots of positives."

  2. 'Scotland have fantastic chance of reaching last 16'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    England 2-1 Scotland

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

England almost looked women against girls in the first half. But in the second half Scotland grew into the game and looked better and stronger.

After today's showing, I'd say Scotland have a fantastic chance of getting out of their group.

  3. 'Scotland were the better team in second half'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    England 2-1 Scotland

    BBC One

Former Scotland goalkeeper Gemma Fay: "I think in the second half Scotland showed why they've come to a World Cup. For me, they were the better team and, but for a couple of chances, they could have got a score draw here."

Alan Dourish: Harsh on Scotland. It was no penalty and 1-1 would have been fair. Still, it bodes well for them in the rest of the tournament and England will undoubtedly be relieved. They have some quality players and will want to win with more authority going forwards.

GG: Get in! First win for England. Excellent match.

Team defence will win you a tournament - I want to see teams pressing, it's not just about the back four and a holding midfielder.

  6. 'England have a lot of work to do'published at 18:58 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    England 2-1 Scotland

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 live

The first half was almost faultless from England. But they still have a lot of work to do judging by that second-half performance.

Phil Neville will want a more polished performance in the next game. They got the job done but their aspiration is still to reach the final.

    England 2-1 Scotland

    Alex Scott
    Ex-England international on BBC One

Am I buzzing that England got the win? Yes. But am I buzzing by the performance? No, but there was a lot of emotion going into this game.

England will dust themselves off and be happy they managed to get the three points and this game is out of the way.

So England go top of Group D but a victory by more than a one-goal margin will see Argentina or Japan move about them when they play each other tomorrow (17:00 BST).

    Scotland are bottom.

  10. 'England could have scored seven'published at 18:56 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    England 2-1 Scotland

    Hope Solo
Former US goalkeeper and World Cup winner

Teams that are successful thus far are the teams that are pressing in defence and Scotland did that in the second half.

Goalkeeper Lee Alexander gave her team the oportunity to get back into the game. England could have had six or seven.

She did a great job. I was impressed with her talent and her leadership. It wasn't always pretty, but she made the saved when she had to.

  11. 'Scotland know they can compete now'published at 18:55 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    England 2-1 Scotland

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Well done to England - deserved winners. They weren't great in the second half but they were utterly dominant in the first half.

But Scotland really did well in the second half. They got beat but they'll be delighted. They know they can compete now and they'll have learnt so much from this match.

  12. 'England have got through it'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

From an England perspective, they've got through it. They've won their first match at a World Cup.

For Scotland, they showed up and proved they're a side to be reckoned with.

No wild celebrations from England at full-time. Boy, did they make hard work of it. Scotland were terrific. Lots of fight, heart and grit.

So much intensity from both teams. Best match of the World Cup so far? Got to be!

Chris Sharman: Enjoying watching the women's world cup so far. Particularly enjoying the fact the players aren't prone to rolling around in fake agony after every bit of contact but just get on with it, something which is slowly eroding my enjoyment of men's football.
