    Japan 0-1 England

    Sue Smith
Former England forward on BBC One

She loves playing against Japan. What a ball from Georgia Stanway. It was a lovely ball to Ellen White. There was so much quality on the pass.

And what a finish from White.

  2. 'Fantastic goal'published at 20:15 British Summer Time 19 June 2019

    Japan 0-1 England

    Rachel Yankey
Ex-England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Fantastic from Georgia Stanway to get away from her marker and then thread it through to Ellen White. Then Ellen's holding off the defender and she just does enough to slide it in. Fantastic goal.

GOAL - Japan 0-1 Englandpublished at 14 mins

    Ellen White

What a pass from young Georgia Stanway!

She turns smartly, uses her strength to hold off Hina Sugita and plays a ball through to Ellen White with the outside of her boot.

White keeps her cool, waits for the keeper to come out, then just lifts it past her and rolls it into the far corner.

  4. 'Stanway effective as a no.10'published at 20:13 British Summer Time 19 June 2019

    Japan 0-0 England

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Georgia Stanway is proving to be quite effective in that number 10 position. She's got the security of playing with Keira Walsh and Jill Scott in that triangle so she's got a bit of freedom.

    Japan 0-0 England

Georgia Stanway, who always likes a shot from distance, strikes it well but it's deflected and England win a corner.

Toni Duggan swings it in towards Jill Scott. It's headed on to Steph Houghton and the Japanese right-back has to nod it behind for another corner.

"I like women's football, but the goalkeepers are terrible."

Yep, that statement is looking more stupid by the day. There have been some great goalkeeping displays at this World Cup, and that was another fine example from Karen Bardsley.

    Japan 0-0 England

England have seen plenty of the ball in the opening 12 minutes. No real chance created yet.

That free-kick from Japan is the closest any team has come.

England's passing is so suspect. There's no excuse for the amount of possession we're giving away.

    Andy Marriott

John McCarron: There's been some great goalkeeping in this tournament, against lesser teams that free-kick from Japan would have been a certain goal!

That was a great strike - I thought it was way too far out. Bardsley had to get across her line, and made a good save

  10. 'Unbelievable effort'published at 20:09 British Summer Time 19 June 2019

    Japan 0-0 England

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

To have any chance of going in it has to be an unbelievable effort. And that was a great effort but an even better save from Karen Bardsley.

  11. GREAT SAVE!published at 10 mins

    Japan 0-0 England

Japan win a free-kick about 35 yards out and Kumi Yokoyama goes for goal. It fizzes through the air and is heading in towards the top left corner but Karen Bardsley watches it the whole way and makes a decent diving save.

  12. 'Daly has been bright'published at 20:07 British Summer Time 19 June 2019

    Japan 0-0 England

    Rachel Yankey
Ex-England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Rachel Daly has been bright in the opening few moments. She's had no trouble getting up and down that left flank - she's just lacked the final ball so far.

The ball bobbles around dangerously in the Japanese half and they can't get it clear as Ellen White refuses to give up.

She's sticking toes, legs, shins in everywhere but eventually the defence hoof it out.

    Japan 0-0 England

    Sue Smith
Former England forward on BBC One

Japan are good at finding space in attack but Steph Houghton saw that one-two. England have to be careful with that.

  15. 'Walsh has grown so much in the past year'published at 20:06 British Summer Time 19 June 2019

    Japan 0-0 England

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Keira Walsh has grown as a player so much in the last year or so. She's become a lot sharper and that's due to playing international football.

    Japan 0-0 England

Japan are so good technically. As soon as a gap opens up at the back, Emi Nakajima feeds an inch-perfect pass through to Kumi Yokoyama.

The striker has space to cut onto her right foot before taking a pop from the edge of the box. It flies over the bar.

Lucy Bronze says Japan's captain Saki Kumagai is one of her best friends at Lyon but they're on opposing sides tonight.

  18. 'Both sides tidy in possession'published at 20:03 British Summer Time 19 June 2019

    Japan 0-0 England

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Japan are usually quite tidy in possession but that's how England like to play now. They like to hold onto the ball, wear down their opponents and then try and catch them on the break.

    Japan 0-0 England

Saki Kumagai, Japan's dangerous number four, is hounded down by Demi Stokes and the left-back wins the ball in midfield.

    Japan 0-0 England

Lucy Bronze and Rachel Daly link-up for the first time down the right before recycling it back across the midfield.

It comes back out to Daly and she flicks it on to Jill Scott and receives it back. The Houston Dash forward then cuts inside but her cross back into the centre for Scott just skips away.
