When the ball goes wide, Spain have got to work a lot harder to stop the cross coming in. That's where most of USA's goals come from.

Whatever happens tonight, France, Norway and England will have watched these opening 20 minutes or so with growing optimism.

Spain have shown that if you put this USA defence under pressure, if you hassle them, if you press them, they can be undone at the back.

Brilliant cross from Crystal Dunn on the left, Alex Morgan is inches away from turning it home but it flies past everyone.

Tobin Heath is causing tremendous problems for Spain down that right-hand side. Spain were lucky not to concede again.

More good wing play by Tobin Heath, who finds Megan Rapinoe. The US skipper tries to get her shot away but she's crowded out and Alex Morgan's follow-up shot is blocked.

Florence Bumble: Yes! Come on Spain! Good work by them pouncing upon that uncharacteristic error by USA there. All the knockout games have been good to watch so far so hoping for more of the same today.

Naive or commendable? The USA don't alter their tactics and Alyssa Naeher plays a short pass to a defender, who almost gets caught out again.

It's all about that ball from Rose Lavelle, it was the pass of the tournament so far. I'm so surprised Megan Rapinoe didn't put that away.

That is the first goal the USA have conceded in this World Cup - and the first in 648 minutes of football in all competitions.

It was only Spain's second goal from open play in this tournament.

Something the USA do well is game management and right after you've scored you don't play out at the wrong moment, but that's exactly what they did.

Jenni Hermoso doesn't miss from there.

    Spain 1-1 USA

The USA almost take the lead again. Rose Lavelle plays an unbelievable through ball to Megan Rapinoe.

The pass didn't' look on at all but somehow Lavelle found her captain. Rapinoe tries to beat Sandra Panos at her near post but the keeper saves.

Greg: Epic blunder by Sauerbrunn and Spain hit back! US center-backs have usually been their weakest part for years and someone has punished them for it again!

Colin Bundred: Let’s play out from the back and give the other side a chance. It’s absolutely laughable.

It doesn't matter how good a team you are if you lose the ball in those areas of the pitch.

And then it falls to a world-class goalscorer like Jenni Hermoso.

Wow! Suddenly, for the first time in this tournament, there are stunned looks on the faces of USA supporters.

They've conceded for the first time and that was not in the script.

    Jenni Hermoso

Oh hello. A USA howler and Spain are level.

US goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher plays a short pass out to Becky Sauerbrunn. She's not alert enough though and Lucia Garcia takes the ball off her feet before feeding Jenni Hermoso.

Naeher is off her line and Hermoso makes no mistake from 20 yards out.

Once again, it's going to sound like a home game for the USA. That's some noise, as the ball hits the back of the net!

They almost fell behind in the first minute but now this'll feel like an ideal start for the holders.

Only Germany (13) have scored more penalties in Women's World Cup history than the USA (10).

To be fair to Tobin Heath, she did try to stay on her feet. And as an attacker, you don't always get those. It was the right decision though.

It was from that switch of play, which the USA do really well, and it's got them a penalty.

And with Megan Rapinoe taking it, it was never in doubt.
