It is nothing new to Carly Telford, she was starting against the USA in the SheBelieves Cup so she will not be fazed. It goes down to Phil Neville, every player feels valued.

  5. 'Morgan doesn't look as threatening'published at 19:44 British Summer Time 2 July 2019

    England v USA (20:00 BST)

    Emma Hayes
Chelsea Women manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

Alex Morgan doesn't look comfortable in herself. She is comfortable in space behind but she has to improve in the space in front with her link up play.

She hasn't looked as threatening as she did four years ago and she has been poor by her standards.

    A little bit nervous tonight.

Steph Houghton has been unbelievable again in another tournament. You have to be in the right positions to make those last ditch tackles.

Steph is a fatastic player on and off the pitch, she trains like a professional and that is why she performs like this in major tournaments.

  7. 'I have a new-found admiration'published at 19:42 British Summer Time 2 July 2019

    England v USA (20:00 BST)

When the Lionesses line up in Lyon, they will have a better chance to beat the USA in a World Cup match than ever before.

Player for player, the American team is the stronger side and you have to think they will get through - but England have the better manager, tactically.

We're going to see tactics come into play in this game more than in any other match in this tournament so far, which is why I'm excited to see what Phil Neville has in store.

I have a new-found excitement and admiration for this England side because of how well they've been doing under Neville over the past 18 months.

    England v USA (20:00 BST)

England boss Phil Neville to BBC Sport: "Karen Bardsley picked up a minor injury against Norway. When you get to these games you need players who are 100% fit.

"We trust Carly. We need to play from the back tonight. Her technique and speed will be vital for us. It was probably the toughest decision I’ve made in this job."

Karen Bardsley makes big time saves, she has done in this tournament. But Carly Telford is ready from what I’ve seen. She has something to prove. You have to be brave with the ball at her feet and she can distribute.

The surprise news that USA star Megan Rapinoe is not starting initially caused a huge stir in a relatively frenzied press area.

Sources from the US camp that I've spoken to won't confirm the reason for her omission, only stressing that it is not a disciplinary matter.

However, it's now becoming clear that Rapinoe - who has scored four goals in the past two games - is not taking any physical part in the warm-up down below us, suggesting she has a knock.

She's watching her team-mates warm-up, with her hands on her hips, clapping at times.

    England v USA (20:00 BST)

Not only is Ellen White leading the goalscoring at this World Cup, she is breaking records along the way.

She is now England's outright record goalscorer at the Women's World Cup with six goals and she needs just one more to move up to fifth in the all-time scoring charts for the Lionesses (currently 33 goals).

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Ellen White has been playing as a lone striker, which can be difficult, but she has used the advice from Phil Neville.

When he first met her she was a runner but he has fine tuned what her performances. Her chances to goal ratio is unbelievable.

    England v USA (20:00 BST)

England manager Phil Neville says he has been planning for a crucial Women's World Cup meeting with the United States since the day he took the job.

"We've planned for it, we've played against them and we know how we're going to play," Neville told BBC Sport.

"When I got the job, the first three games I looked at were the USA. I was sitting in my house in Valencia and watched three games in one afternoon because I thought: 'How can we win the World Cup?'

"You have to beat the best, and the USA are the best. They've proven it.

"But we're ready for them. Sometimes, before these games, you can have fear and trepidation - but I can smell nothing but freedom, happiness and excitement."

My daughter Amelia met with Ellen White while she was a Birmingham City player. She took part in a coaching session and Ellen was watching on. She later spoke to her, told her she had talent and gave some really positive advice which only inspired her further. Four years on and my daughter now plays for Wolverhampton Wanderers and always speaks about that moment with Ellen when she gave her the belief that girls could play football too.
