  6. Could there be a title play-off?published at 19:43 British Summer Time 4 May 2019

What happens if Manchester City and Liverpool finish exactly top of the table on points, goal difference and goals scored?

Then we would need a one-off Premier League title play-off to decide the champions.

It's not too likely as both sides would need to drop points but here's how it could happen...

Liverpool win 5-0 and lose 2-1 AND Man City draw both games 0-0

Liverpool win 4-0 and draw 3-3 AND Man City win 1-0 and lose 1-0

Liverpool draw both games 3-3 AND Man City draw 0-0 and lose 4-0

Liverpool draw 3-3 and lose 4-3 AND Man City lose 3-0 and lose 2-0

*similar scores to above could also produce a play-off - if City and Liverpool both score and concede an identical amount of goals on top of the above scorelines without changing any of the results (eg in the top scenario Liverpool winning 6-1 and losing 2-1 and Man City drawing 1-1 and 0-0)

Ash Williams: Liverpool should be given HUGE credit to be in the title race still. Their squad is nowhere near as talented as City’s. Whatever happens Liverpool is my team of the season.

  10. Best second-placed team ever?published at 19:39 British Summer Time 4 May 2019

    Newcastle v Liverpool (19:45 BST)

Whatever happens now, we are likely to see records for the second-placed team (whether that's Manchester City or Liverpool).

The Reds already have as many points as any team have ever amassed to finish second. Liverpool have got 91 points from 36 games. The record for second place was Leeds in 1970-71, also 91 (adjusted to three points for a win).

    City currently have 92.

The previous highest Premier League total which failed to secure the title came when Manchester United finished behind Manchester City on goal difference with 89 points in 2012.

  11. 'I go back to Newcastle because I love the city'published at 19:37 British Summer Time 4 May 2019

    Newcastle v Liverpool (19:45 BST)

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum played 40 times for Newcastle in 2015-16 before moving to Anfield.

"I have great memories," he said. "I enjoyed the club, I enjoyed the city, I enjoyed the people, I enjoyed my team-mates.

"That’s also the reason that I felt free there and I could play the way I was playing and I scored goals.

"I only have good memories; the only bad thing is that we were relegated, but besides that I had a great time there and my family had a great time there. Once in a while, I go back to Newcastle because I love the city.

"It’s going to be really tough. I know how they play against big teams, it’s always difficult for good teams to win away games there."

Former Liverpool defender and Newcastle coach

We already know what Newcastle are like, and how difficult they make it when they face the top sides.

When people talk about teams being organised, Newcastle are on that list and that is because they are a well-coached team and Benitez is an extremely good coach.

It is as if every player on all of his teams has always known exactly what their role is, and what is expected of them.

So this will be a tough game for Liverpool, because they will have to break Newcastle down.

It might actually help that they lost 3-0 to Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, because it means they won't have one eye on Tuesday's second leg any more.

It is not as if they got a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp and will be thinking 'we've got a fantastic chance'.

They will know they are outsiders in that tie now, and they have to focus fully on the Premier League, where any slip by Manchester City will let them in.

    Lawro's prediction: 0-2

Cardiff getting relegated is bad news for Liverpool actually. It means Brighton have nothing to play for on the final day against Manchester City.

  14. Bad omens for Liverpoolpublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 4 May 2019

    Newcastle v Liverpool (19:45 BST)

Newcastle have only lost one of their past seven home games against Liverpool in the Premier League - although that was a 6-0 thrashing in April 2013.

Liverpool have lost 10 Premier League games at Newcastle, only suffering more against Manchester United (16), Chelsea (14) and Tottenham (12).

The Magpies have won six of their past seven Premier League home games, scoring at least twice in each victory. The exception was a 1-0 defeat by Crystal Palace.

Newcastle have won their last four home league matches in May, scoring 13 goals and conceding just once.

  15. Good omens for Liverpoolpublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 4 May 2019

    Newcastle v Liverpool (19:45 BST)

Rafael Benitez has not won in his five previous league games against Liverpool, drawing three and losing two. The only side he has faced more often in the Premier League without winning is Birmingham City.

Newcastle could lose their 10th home league fixture of the season, which would be their most in a top-flight campaign since 1988-89.

Liverpool are on a seven-match Premier League winning streak, scoring 20 goals and conceding five.

The Reds are on the longest current unbeaten run in the top flight with 11 wins and four draws in 15 games.

  17. 'We will try to do our best'published at 19:28 British Summer Time 4 May 2019

    Newcastle v Liverpool (19:45 BST)

Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez says his side will not do his former club Liverpool any favours.

"We are professional and have to do our job," said Benitez, whose future at the Magpies is in doubt.

"My relationship with the city of Liverpool, the club and the fans is there. I cannot forget that I had six years at Liverpool, so I will not say ‘no I don’t feel anything’.

"At the same time, I have been to play Liverpool with Chelsea, with Newcastle, and we have to do our job.

“We have 52,000 in our stadium, it’s the last home game of the season. I think everybody understands that we are professionals, and we will try to do our best.”

The Magpies are safe on 42 points, with nothing tangible to play for in the final two games.

    Gary Flintoff
BBC Radio 5 live reporter at St James' Park

There are just over 15 minutes to go before kick-off here at St James’ Park, but the ground is far from full.

One seasoned reporter, who knows this part of the world well, has suggested to me it will not be long until the place is full and that many of the locals have probably been enjoyed a beverage or two in town before making their way to the ground.

Well, it is Saturday night after all.
