Sunderland, who finished fifth in League One, gained revenge for their Checkatrade Trophy final defeat by Portsmouth by claiming a narrow 1-0 aggregate win over Pompey thanks to Chris Maguire's goal in the first leg at the Stadium of Light.

Charlton's route to Wembley was a little more... Tricky. Lee Bowyer's men had finished third in the table and won 2-1 in the first leg at Doncaster to seemingly set themselves well on the way to Wembley. It proved to be a little more dramatic than expected.

The Addicks took a second minute lead but were pegged back by goals from Tommy Rowe and an 88th minute header from Andy Butler. Rovers then took the lead in extra-time through John Marquis only for Darren Pratley to level matters up again almost immediately to send the tie to penalties.

The London side claimed a 4-3 win in the shoot-out to set up today's showpiece.

Before we look ahead to today's game let's have another look back to that day 21 years ago.

My colleague Rob Stevens has been speaking to the key figures involved in that incredible game in 1998.

From pandemonium to an England international wishing the ground would 'swallow him up', it's all in there.

It's been 21 years since arguably the most exciting play-off final of all time.

Charlton's 7-6 penalty shoot-out victory over Sunderland after the game finished level at 4-4 after extra-time is a match that will live long in the memories of football fans regardless of allegiance.

Clive Mendonca's hat-trick for the Addicks, Kevin Phillips' lob to break a Sunderland goalscoring record and poor Michael Gray's penalty being saved by Charlton goalkeeper Sasa Ilic to bring the curtain down on a crazy day at the old Wembley.

Twenty one years is a long time in football and the two teams meet again today with a place in the Championship rather than Premier League at stake.

One thing's for sure, if they serve up something half as good as that May day back in 1998 we're in for a real treat.

Good afternoon and welcome to live text coverage of the League One play-off final between Charlton and Sunderland.
