John McGinn slips Tammy Abraham in down the right channel, tracked by Fikayo Tomori, who does well to recover a slip and hook the ball clear.

Derby's afternoon possibly getting worse as key winger Harry Wilson nurses a shoulder injury.

Closing in on the hour mark, and Derby need to get a grip.

More positive signs for Villa, as Conor Hourihane wins the 50-50 with Bradley Johnson and stomps forward towards goal.

Albert Adomah gets in down the right for the Villans, but the cuteness of veteran Ashley Cole sees Derby win a free-kick in the corner.

Kelle Roos took that ball right off the head of Tyrone Mings who soared into the air and looked as though he was going to power it in for Villa's second.

Rams goalkeeper Kelle Roos fancies he's Franz Beckenbauer as Villa pour forward, and he only just gets the ball clear for a throw.

Derby wobbling here. Losing their cool, as a Jayden Bogle puts his boot on the foot of Anwar El Ghazi. Free-kick Villa, left side of the box.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Derby

John McGinn is clattered by Derby centre-back Fikayo Tomori, having done him all ends up with a flick. Tomori stayed down, and it looked a bit like Gazza in the 1991 FA Cup final had occurred.

However, he recovered enough to get a yellow card.

I’d be surprised if one of Tom Huddlestone and Bradley Johnson don’t make way relatively soon if it remains 1-0. It’s been a bit too predicable for the Rams so far.

Martyn Waghorn and Jack Marriott both have the energy and hustle and bustle that could just spark Derby into life. In two and a half matches against Villa so far this season, they haven’t scored and have conceded eight.

  7. YELLOW CARDpublished at 49 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Derby

Conor Hourihane in the book for Villa now.

Then it all boils over after another challenge. A fiery start to the second half.

Tom Huddlestone scythed down Jack Grealish, cue the spat.

Few scuffles breaking out, and the two captains are called by referee Paul Tierney. Peacekeeping mission for him.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Derby

Sloppy work from Derby in midfield is picked off and Villa break.

Tammy Abraham's footwork bamboozles the Rams and he steams forward, before he's clipped.

Villa wanted the advantage. Whistle blown and a yellow card for Mason Bennett.

John McGinn took it swiftly but his shot whistles wide.

Big second half then. Derby have it.

Remarkably, there hasn't been a Championship play-off final in which both teams have scored since West Ham's 2-1 win over Blackpool in 2012.

Derby had been patient but perhaps somewhat constrained in their play in that opening half.

How much will that Anwar El Ghazi goal make them change their approach?

Incredible noise from the Villa fans greeted that goal and again as the half-time whistle blew.

You can feel the buzz around one half of Wembley. Jody Morris and Frank Lampard raced away to get back to do their thing at the break.

Jayden Bogle’s lack of awareness of Anwar El Ghazi’s positioning for the goal has cost Derby dear. Lampard and Morris have work to do.

The respective team-talks just took a pretty big turn as Anwar El Ghazi jolts one side of the cavernous bowl that is Wembley Stadium to life with Aston Villa's opener.

Derby had been really competitive in the opening 45 minutes, enjoying plenty of possession albeit not many clear chances, but that goal changes the complexion of things.

Can't see Villa resting on laurels and trying to defend the lead, but Derby must stay calm - while still coming out to play and attack.

He thoroughly deserves it. I think he's been Villa's best player in this first half.

It might have hit his shoulder but I don't care. The onus is on Derby to come and chase this game now.

    ASTON VILLA IN FRONT!

Wonderful cross by Ahmed Elmohamady bent to the back post, Anwar El Ghazi stoops and the ball skids across the turf as his header bobbles into the corner. In fact it looks like it came off his shoulder.

It came from a counter-attack, poured into the corner for Albert Adomah who cut it back smartly.

Villa will go in ahead at the break. If the cliche is believed, a great time to score.

Derby will count that as a chance.

Hard to say who has the momentum right now. Not sure if either side can lay claim to it.

Couple of half-chances, Tammy Abraham bending a shot just over for Villa and Mason Mount for Derby.

Mason Bennett wins a corner, more hard-plugging away from him is keeping Villa's defence honest.
