Then Villa streak forward, Jack Grealish pushes the ball into the path of Anwar El Ghazi but he's called offside. Replays suggest he wasn't. He was well-placed in the Rams box too.

Villa boss Dean Smith has been pretty rigid in his hands in pockets watching approach so far, but that effort by Tammy Abraham had him throwing his hands to his head. So close from the on-loan Chelsea man.

Derby manager Frank Lampard has adopted a more serious, arms folded stance. What would the body language experts make of the difference I wonder? Both look pretty dapper in their Wembley suits.

Anwar El Ghazi just arrows into the box and Derby are like rabbits in the headlights. In the end the Villa dangerman just couldn't dig the ball out of his feet and it's cleared.

That has to be their attacking focus, run at Derby and get them on the backpedal.

Tammy Abraham has Villa fans on their feet, but the striker's right foot shot soars just over the top of the right corner of the goal.

"Villa til I die" briefly reverberates around the stadium. The atmosphere has dimmed more than a tad, reflecting a lull in the game.

Jed Steer forced into a wild swipe to clear for Villa and gives away a throw-in. Really good chasing down from the Rams. It all came from a Villa throw that they didn't quite execute properly.

Derby starting to creep into this.

Not a game for the craftsmen yet though.

Tyrone Mings cuts out a Mason Bennett cross and Villa come away again.

Jayden Bogle hauled back by Anwar El Ghazi. Free-kick for the Rams and a yellow card for the Villa winger.

The free-kick is wasted though, as it sailed high and wide to the back post to Jed Steer's relief.

Derby are starting to get a bit more possession, especially through Tom Huddlestone.

But it's very, very slow though. Villa are saying come at us and we'll take it from there.

Still no shots on target from either side.

Plenty of gas from Ahmed Elmohamady gets Villa downfield, but a lack of real clarity about the move sees possession exchanged.

Tom Huddlestone broke up play and got forward, roared on by cries of 'Shoot!', but he resisted the temptation.

Villa concede a free-kick. Derby have an opportunity here.

Passing not quite crisp enough for either side to unlock their respective defences, as a few awry attempts have shown.

It's been quite open and interesting though, certainly not a chess match.

High-tempo, just need a bit higher quality.

Villa work the ball to Albert Adomah in space on the right but he hooks his cross well over to the opposite flank.

Anwar El Ghazi recycles it and John McGinn clips in, but it's wide and no danger for Derby.

Then Derby race forward, and it takes a last-ditch tackle to stop the lively Tom Lawrence, as he looked to pull the trigger but could only scuff wide under pressure.

A collective sigh all around Wembley when Derby captain Richard Keogh went steaming into that likely goal-saving challenge on Anwar El Ghazi a few minutes ago.

Win or bust, that tackle. It was brilliantly timed and very much appreciated by boss Frank Lampard.

Mason Bennett tears after a ball over the top, like an over-excitable bulldog. He'll need that enthusiasm for a fairly thankless task. Derby's line-runner this afternoon needs to unruffle the cool Tyrone Mings.

Derby stroking it about at the back, but then Jayden Bogle lets it run to touch on halfway. A few jeers from the Villa ranks.

You sense the team that can curate the pace to their liking and get their playmakers on the ball will profit.

Villa break, ball goes forward to Anwar El Ghazi who bursts down the left, and only Keogh's lunge stops him.

Corner comes to nothing in the end, despite Derby failing to clear it.

Plenty of niggly fouls in midfield too, scrappy and snappy. Plenty to discuss in the two technical areas.

It's been frantic, it's been end-to-end, it's going to be hearts in your mouth stuff.

But Derby are beginning to get a bit of a foothold.

Aston Villa unpicked down their left as a ball into the channel was chased, but as the ball was played in, Bradley Johnson dummied to no one.

Given away. That was a good chance for Derby to have a go, not enough support backing up.

Jack Grealish's foul in midfield gives Derby a free-kick, and it's floated across the box.

Bradley Johnson flicks it into the mix and it takes a high boot and a free-kick to bring the move to an end.

Lively start.
