So, a flash of Oliver Burke's boot ensures Steve Clarke's Scotland reign gets off to a winning start.

Head coach Steve Clarke had emphasised to his players ahead of kick-off that a win over Cyprus was a must to retain hopes of qualifying, Oliver Burke has revealed.

"He couldn't have said any more that we need the win tonight," the forward tells BBC Scotland.

"Training has been tough and it showed in how fit we were tonight and how we dominated the game.

"We showed how good a team we can be."

Next up are the world's top-ranked team, Belgium, on Tuesday in Brussels.

"We go into the game with full confidence after the win," Burke adds.

Scotland match-winner Oliver Burke is delighted to be ending the season on a high after being sent to Celtic on loan after failing to hold down a regular place with West Brom.

"An amazing feeling for me," he says. "My first Scotland senior goal, so I am over the moon.

"It's been a roller-coaster, but I'm here now and I'm delighted."

Burke praised captain Andy Robertson, the left-back having opened the scoring days after lifting the Champions League trophy with Liverpool.

"An amazing strike and he's a fantastic player and he showed his quality and it was a world-class goal," he says.

"It is amazing to have a Champions League winner leading the line for us."

"There was a lot of good stuff to get us 1-0 in front," says Scotland head coach Steve Clarke.

"We didn't go crazy, chasing the game. We knew Cyprus were a competent team.

"We had English Premier League quality down the left with Andy Robertson and Ryan Fraser. They gave Cyprus a torrid time. it's no surprise both goals came from that side.

"Lots to work on, for sure, but let's just enjoy the win and then we'll work on the next game.

"Belgium are the best team in the world but we can go there with a little bit of hope. We know we are back in the group and we go there confident and without the pressure we had tonight.

"I don't think it's a free hit. We are still chasing points in the group. We left three points behind in Kazakhstan that we have to try to recover. The next four matches - Belgium (A), Russia (H), Belgium (H), Russia (A) - from those games we have to find some points."

Steve Clarke said his side were under pressure heading into tonight's Euro 2020 qualifier against Cyprus.

"We didn't speak about it much before the game," he says. "But we knew that if we didn't get maximum points tonight then the group was almost beyond us.

"So, I think we should credit the players tonight and maybe not look too much at one or two little mistakes."

Scotland manager Steve Clarke praises his players' "character and resilience" in how they responded to conceding a late equaliser at Hampden.

"It would've been easy for them to feel sorry for themselves," he says. "But they didn't and I think that bodes well for the future."

"It's difficult for me to be too critical [over Cyprus' equaliser] with the players, after I asked them to give us a win. They gave us three points - they couldn't do any more."

Scotland manager Steve Clarke, speaking at his post-match media conference, says he's pleased for his players.

"The way they've worked this week, we put ourselves in a position to win the game with a great strike from Andy Robertson.

"From there, I thought we had control of the game and I couldn't see Cyprus scoring from open play.

"But, unfortunately, we switched off on a set play and got severely punished for it."

Next up for Scotland is a visit to Group I leaders Belgium on Tuesday.

"We'll do one or two walk-through sessions, a lot of video work," head coach Steve Clarke tells Sky Sports.

"I'm confident we have a group players who will certainly make it a difficult night for Belgium."

"A lot of things to be pleased about and a lot of things to work on," that's the assessment of Scotland head coach Steve Clarke, who looks like he's kicked every ball at Hampden tonight.

"I thought we did okay," he tells Sky Sports. "At 1-0, I thought we were comfortable but we switch off from a set play. It would have been easy to feel sorry for ourselves but the players showed great resilience and that's a good sign.

"The way showed character to bounce back gives us good hope for the future.

"I've only had seven training sessions, so it's not going to change overnight. I've given the lads a lot of information and I think some of them have taken it on too literally.

"It was a game we couldn't afford to lose and we handled that pressure."

Belgium remain three points clear at the top of Group I ahead of Russia and Scotland after a convincing win over Kazakhstan.

The visitors had ultimately cost Alex McLeish his job as Scotland head coach with their opening win in Kazakhstan.

But Dries Mertens made sure there was to be no shock in Belgium by opening the scoring after only 11 minutes before setting up Timothy Castagne three minutes later and, shortly after the break, Romelu Lukaku.
