But it’s to the current crop of internationals the Scotland fans will be looking to in the second half of this Euro 2020 qualifier against Cyprus. They’ll want the good movement to continue, but they’ll also want to see goals...so too will Steve Clarke, I would imagine.

Belgium are firmly in control at the top of Group I as they lead by two goals against the side who gave Scotland a bloody nose in their opening game.

The home side could have been ahead by more than just Dries Mertens' deflected shot and Timothy Castangne's header had it not been for a couple of fine saves from Kazakhstan goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov.

There was an awful lot of possession for Scotland and a number of 'almost' moments. The home fans will be slightly anxious because there hasn't really been any clear-cut chances.

The Azzurri are dominating in Athens with Leonardo Bonucci, Nicolo Barella and Lorenzo Insigne all on the scoresheet.

Barella even spurned a late chance to make it 4-0 having been put clean through one-on-one with the keeper.

They lead the world champions and Group H.

And it could have been three, too, as centre-half Merih Demiral headed wide late on.

Half-time in Belarus and it's Leroy Sane's goal the difference between the sides at the moment.

The front three of Sane, Serge Gnabry and Marco Reus are, unsurprisingly, causing the hosts plenty of problems.

Germany remain second in Group B, having played a game less than Northern Ireland.

Mmmm. Steve Clarke's Scotland have kept a clean sheet but will be disappointed at a blunt attack against modest opponents.

Hope springs eternal for a better second 45 after a half-time slice of orange and some much-needed zest and tactical guidance from the new man at the helm...

Two minutes plus any additional time remaining at the end of the first half - referee Ola Hobber Nilsen shouldn't be thinking about any of that - with Hampden largely subdued by a low-key opening 45 minutes.

Hang on a minute... Cyprus, baring their attacking for the first time in what seems like an eternity, try to cut through Scotland on the right.

Peiros Sotiriou sends a shot across David Marshall, the Scotland keeper palms it away and Stephen O'Donnell completes the clearance.

A dangerous Scotland attack sees James Forrest teed up at the edge of the area, but his deflected shot fails to seriously trouble Pardo.

Attempting to drag his team in front, Scotland captain Andy Robertson leads by example with an attack down the left flank.

However, the Scots are struggling for fluency in the face of disciplined Cypriot pressing. The result has been precious few efforts on target and even less for either goalkeeper to concern themselves with.
