Southgate has done many good things but has a complete blind spot over the midfield. We saw it in the World Cup and it's hampering our progress now. We need players who can receive the ball in tight areas, control the tempo and pick a creative pass. His snubbing of Maddison this season is bizarre and frankly a bit worrying.

  2. 'Slow start to the second half'published at 15:05 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    Switzerland 0-0 England

    Ian Dennis
Radio 5 live senior football reporter

The England supporters are here in large numbers and, to their credit, they're trying to raise everybody here by making some noise but this start to the second half is as slow as this game has been.

England try and hit Trent Alexander-Arnold on the big diag but it's out of play. Switzerland then come down the other end but Remo Freuler doesn't get hold of his shot at all.

  5. 'Not the performance Southgate will have wanted'published at 15:02 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    Switzerland 0-0 England

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

It hasn't been the performance Gareth Southgate will have wanted.

They've had the chances but they just haven't been ruthless. Hopefully that will change in the second half.

England are slow, give the ball away cheaply and struggle to play out from the back.

Welcome to the half-time analysis of pretty much any game I can remember from 1990-onwards.

Oliver: England are so slow, I do not understand why Harry Kane is starting he is not fully fit and did very little in the Netherlands game and the Champions League final. Why not give Wilson a go he's fast and fully fit and can get the ball behind Switzerland!

LermaTheLemur: So dull but what do you expect when he selects off form players?! At least getting Wilson on, we'd have a striker who likes to run in behind and stretch the defence. Him and Sancho will liven us up no end.

  10. England should be aheadpublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in Guimaraes

Hardly a classic and the closing moments of the first half were played out in near silence. For all that, England should still be ahead. Raheem Sterling and Dele Alli wasteful and Harry Kane unlucky.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez was the only England player to complete 100% of his passes in the first half (47/47).

Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Dele Alli have all had big chances for England.

It's all been a little bit lacklustre in truth.

England should be winning with the chances they've had. But as a game... eugh.

I make it three good chances and a Harry Kane chip against the bar. Positives for Gareth Southgate to take, I'm sure.

  17. 'England not ruthless enough'published at 14:44 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    Switzerland 0-0 England

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Eric Dier hasn't been careful enough in possession today.

But nevertheless England should be ahead with the amount of chances they've had. They just haven't been ruthless enough.
