A huge sense of optimism amongst the travelling Sheffield United fans. Yes, it’s nice to be back after 12 years away from the Premier League. But the Blades fans I’ve spoken to feel too many pundits have unfairly predicted their team will go down.

Interestingly, nine of the Sheffield United starting line-up today also played the final game of their last Championship season. A very loyal selection by Chris Wilder.

It's difficult when you see so many good things get taken away by a hair's breadth. It was agonising when you see such good movement and people not going to celebrate it because they think it's going to be taken away or they're going to have to wait two minutes.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche gives summer signing Erik Pieters a place in the starting line-up following his arrival from Championship side Stoke City, while returning striker Jay Rodriguez takes a place on the bench.

Manchester City's hat-trick hero Raheem Sterling speaking to BT Sport: "The most important thing was to start well and get the win. Once the second goal went in I thought we were brilliant.

"It was quite difficult in the first half. Some of our touches were sloppy but once the team got into a rhythm the passes came and more chances came.

"With the players we have here there are competitions in training every day. It's a joy to put the ball in the back of the net.

On the use of VAR: "At the end of the day, as long as the decision is right, that is all that matters."

Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus: "I am so happy for the match. I feel good with this number (nine). It is the time for me to change my career."

Raheem Sterling is still learning what he's capable of. He's played the second half predominantly in the middle. His movement off the ball has been good, his link-up play has been good and his finishing has been excellent. And he's had a goal chalked off as well.

Josh Earl: Hat-trick on the first game of the season, 4 in 2 including Community Shield.. quiet start for Sterling.

Adam Salter: I did not see this as 5-0 match at half time. The way West Ham have collapsed in the second half is criminal. Not sure how they can get in the Top 6, based on this performance

Plenty of VAR controversy in that game. Worth reading up on the new Premier League rules here if you were confused by some of the decisions.

I just haven't enjoyed what's gone on today. The two goals (by Raheem Sterling checked by VAR) were very similar. One was given, one was wasn't. We're talking fractions. The penalty, a little bit of common sense, did it really need to be taken again? No, call it a good save. You want that human element sometimes, but we haven't had that today. The game has been ruined by what's gone on.

    That's the hat-trick!

Riyad Mahrez slips it into the path of Raheem Sterling, who has made another excellent run in behind the defence.

He takes one touch to gain a yard and another to set himself before slotting it into the bottom right corner.

It's disillusioning fans, this whole process, at this moment in time. We're not going to be talking about games of football anymore, individual players. We're going to be talking about, I don't know what to call it... maybe a dictator?
