After a truly superb day of top-flight Scottish football, our attention now turns to the Scottish sides competing for a spot in this season's European competitions.

  2. 'He never misses'published at 17:45 British Summer Time 4 August 2019

    Aberdeen 3-2 Hearts

Derek McInnes was full of praise for Sam Cosgrove, who scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season today.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, he said: "I wouldn't have played Sam [Cosgrove] today. Curtis [Main] would have played. But when you see Sam up against three big centre backs he's led the line brilliantly.

"He gets his first goal and tucked away his penalty. He's almost [Adam] Rooney-like with his penalties. He never misses. He's going to be very important to us and it's great to see he's picked up where he left off last season."

  3. 'We were on our knees still finding a way to win'published at 17:40 British Summer Time 4 August 2019

    Aberdeen 3-2 Hearts

Derek McInnes was determined to applaud his team after a physically excessive win in Europe just a few days ago and their ability to keep going despite going behind.

He said: "Thankfully the resolve and the spirit in my team was clear and even after getting the equaliser you would have forgiven my players for thinking we’d take a draw for everything that went on before. But there was no let up from the team.

"It was about making sure we never ran out of time and the winning goal was everything that I wanted from my team. That was a team that were on their knees but still finding a way to win. That’s why I’m excited about this campaign."

  4. 'We got dragged in to a game that was foul after foul'published at 17:37 British Summer Time 4 August 2019

    Aberdeen 3-2 Hearts

However, after going ahead McInnes believes his side stopped playing their game and started playing Hearts'.

He said: "I wasn't too pleased after that. I felt that we got dragged in to a game that was foul after foul. And just no real rhythm to the game. I wanted us to try and assert our authority again.

"So it was a bit stop-start, it was a lot for the referee to contend with and as is usually the case with this fixture, there were a lot of fouls out there."

  5. 'We attacked with speed and plenty of purpose'published at 17:34 British Summer Time 4 August 2019

    Aberdeen 3-2 Hearts

Despite the back and forth drama of today's clash at Pittodrie, Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes was happy with his side's ability to dominate the first half.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, he said: "If we could have scripted that before hand we would have all been very happy but we had work to do. Certainly, I was happy with the opening period of the game.

"I thought our shape was causing problems. We attacked with speed and plenty of purpose. There was some good penetration about us.

"We needed to get that goal to capitalise on that dominance and despite the good play that we had it was a long ball over the top and a bit of indecision between the goalkeeper and defender and then Sam [Cosgrove] managed to capitalise on that."

    John Souttar

John Souttar was forced to come off late in the first half during today's clash with Aberdeen.

When asked about an update on his situation, Craig Levein said: "He's rolled his ankle. So the ligaments would have been stretched. I don't know yet so we'll just have to wait and see."

  8. 'I could talk about positives for a while'published at 17:20 British Summer Time 4 August 2019

    Aberdeen 3-2 Hearts

Despite the failure to take any points from the game, there were positives from Hearts' performance that Craig Levein took note of.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, he said: "Steven Naismith would obviously be in the team from the beginning if he was 100% but those minutes on the pitch would have helped him.

"He comes on and scores with his first touch. Which is great for him and great for the team. I thought Conor [Washington] was very good with his running off of Uche [Ikpeazu]. I could stand here and talk for a while with the things I was pleased with but ultimately we didn't win the game."

  9. 'We deserved more than a draw'published at 17:16 British Summer Time 4 August 2019

    Aberdeen 3-2 Hearts

Two moments of madness from individuals in the Hearts team ended up costing their side dearly and Craig Levein was all too aware of that after the match.

"Even if we had come away with 2-2 I'd still be a little bit disappointed because I felt that we deserved more than that," said the Hearts manager.

"And then the extra man made a difference. Clevid [Dikamona] made a stupid decision to leave a foot in at the penalty area when he didn't need to. And that has cost us. So from my point of view I'm ruing those silly decisions that we made.

"To come here and compete the way we did made me really happy. But to lose the game was a real shame."

  10. 'Football is cruel'published at 17:11 British Summer Time 4 August 2019

    Aberdeen 3-2 Hearts

In typical fashion, Hearts manager Craig Levein was in no mood for beating around the bush after the dramatic end to today's game.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, he said: "Football is cruel and I should have been talking after this game about a lot of the positives that happened in our game today. But instead I'm ruing the poor decision making that we had on two occasions for two goals."

It certainly helps if you can come in to a new team and make an impact. And the four players Aberdeen have brought in have made an impact. There's no better way to make an impact than to score the winner.

    Stephen Couse

It was an incredible spectacle, and a feisty affair, at Pittodrie as the Dons showed no sign of Europa League fatigue to fight back from 2-1 down.

The game swung the way of Hearts for the briefest of time in the second half, with the substitutions of Steven Naismith and Conor Washington seemingly a masterstroke from Craig Levein, after Sam Cosgrove got the opener.

But Aberdeen were handed the momentum again with Aaron Hickey given his second yellow soon after, and a silly error from Clevid Dikamona conceding a penalty that Cosgrove coolly finished.

With no substitutions left, and the Dons full of confidence, up stepped Ryan Hedges to win the game, getting on to the end of a cross from fellow new recruit Greg Leigh.

It's pretty much had everything this game for a quiet Sunday afternoon. It looked as though Aberdeen were well on top for the majority of the game with Hearts always in it. And then the substitutions are made and Aberdeen couldn't deal with it. Hickey gets himself a silly sending off, then the penalty. The whole thing has turned on its head and looks like Aberdeen are going to take the three points.

Minutes ago Hearts were well on top and through their own stupidity the red card, needless penalty they've given Aberdeen the chance to get back in and likely now win this game.

I don't think there's any nasty in it but it was the correct decision, Hickey went to ground to stop the Aberdeen player getting the ball and he's got McGinn with his heels. He'll be disappointed but it's going to happen in his career and he's going to have to learn to deal with it. Another twist to a great game.
