Plenty of action has sped up since I left the office last night. Romelu Lukaku is on the verge of signing for Inter Milan, Tottenham are closing in on Paulo Dybala, Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso; and Arsenal have agreed an £8m deal for David Luiz.

Hopefully those deals will come through in the next few hours...

  5. Redmond signs new Southampton dealpublished at 10:10 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

Southampton's player of the season, Nathan Redmond, has signed a new four-year contract.

Redmond was a crucial player for the Saints under Ralph Hasenhüttl last season, scoring nine times in the final six months of the season.

“I’m really happy to have signed, and I'm just wanting to get the season up and going now," he said.

“We've got a great group of players here, who I've been with for the last three years. I see them every single day and it's a pleasure to go out there and perform with them at the weekend and train hard with them every single week.

"I feel like we can hopefully build something special and to be a part of it for the next four years is good for me.”

  6. Man Utd not filling Lukaku void is 'worrying' - Jenaspublished at 10:06 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

In terms of the money, United have got a good deal out of it. But we're yet to see any replacement with regards to the goals that Romelu Lukaku brings to the table. Yes, it didn't 100% work out for him at Manchester United but he's scored goals throughout his career.

United have been linked to the striker at Athletic Bilbao, Inaki Williams, who's a very good young prospect. We'll see if that comes off in the next few hours but if United go into the season without Lukaku and not filing that void, I think that's worrying for United fans.

OK, hopefully this one is a little tougher.

Liverpool appear to be on course for a quiet deadline day but they've had busy ones in the past.

Scotland international John McGinn has signed a new-five year contract at Aston Villa.

The midfielder had been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer.

“I have loved every minute of my time at Aston Villa and I am delighted to commit myself to the club for the long term," said McGinn.

  9. Luiz could be huge purchase for Arsenal - Jenaspublished at 09:56 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

    Jermaine Jenas
    Ex-Tottenham midfielder on BBC News

A lot of purists wouldn't agree that David Luiz cures Arsenal's defensive problems. But I would say that if he plays in a back three it would massively help them defensively. When he plays in a back four he can be a bit of a liability. But Unai Emery likes playing with three at the back so, for £8m, it's a huge purchase.

Maybe David Luiz got a bit of insight that he wouldn't be starting for Chelsea, and I like that about Frank Lampard, that he's said early whether or not he'll be part of his plans or not, and then he can move on. The figure is quite low but you don't want people around that you know will hinder the mentality of the squad.

  10. 'Luiz a popular if polarising player'published at 09:54 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

    The view from the fans

    Chelsea

Ross Mooring, Chelsea Fancast: "The shock news overnight surrounds the impending departure of David Luiz across London to Arsenal, very much a deal out of the blue with the Brazilian defender having only just signed a contract extension back in May.

"A popular if polarising player in his time at Chelsea, Luiz has won a bundle of trophies while at the club over two spells, but has never ridden his game of mistakes that top level central defenders just aren't supposed to make.

"While the club cannot sign a replacement, with promising centre back Fikayo Tomori who won Derby's player of the year award last season rejoining the first team squad behind Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and fellow returning loanee Kurt Zouma, new manager Frank Lampard was willing to part with one of the group and this has now been settled for him."

I don't know what Man Utd's plan is here. Apparently turned down Dybala, Fernandes and Eriksen. I understand we have Rashford, Martial and James which is a pacey exciting front three, but we need something different. What's the plan B? We should've bumped Pogba and taken a couple of players in exchange. I know it's not as simple as that but seriously does the team think the attack is good enough? I'm hoping the back four will be sorted and settled this year but I can't see a lot of goals. Shambles.

    Paul, Reading

If United don't replace Lukaku with another striker today it would be an absolute disaster. We cannot rely on Rashford, Martial, an injury prone and past his best Sanchez and academy graduate Greenwood if we want to be serious this season.

  16. Redknapp has his say on Balepublished at 09:39 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

It wouldn't be transfer deadline day without Harry Redknapp, would it?

The former Tottenham manager has been speaking to BBC Radio Wales this morning - whether or not it was through a car window is not yet clear.

Redknapp was discussing the day's comings and goings, as well as the future of Real Madrid and Wales forward Gareth Bale, who he coached at Spurs.

"I managed him for four years and he’s absolutely low maintenance, not a problem to anybody, gets on with his football, so I’m surprised really the way it’s evolved at Real Madrid, surprised at how Zinedine Zidane came out and suddenly said he’s not wanted here," Redknapp told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast With Claire Summers.

"It wasn’t the ideal way to deal with it and Gareth’s not going to be pushed in to or rushed in to going somewhere he doesn’t want to go.

"He’s not a lad who’s in the dressing room causing you problems or upsetting the rest of the spirit in the team, he’s not one of them lads, so I don’t know why you would treat Gareth like that. It was a bit strange."
