Tottenham are close to reaching an agreement to sign Juventus and Argentina forward Paulo Dybala. It is not done but Spurs and Juve are hopeful of completing a deal before the 5pm deadline.

Spurs stepped up their interest in the 25 year old after a move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes failed to materialise because of the Portuguese club’s asking price, and following Dybala’s proposed transfer to Manchester United being called off.

  4. 'Palpable excitement at Chelsea'published at 08:05 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

    The view from the fans

    Chelsea

Ross Mooring, Chelsea Fancast: "In spite of Chelsea's transfer ban, thanks to January's early Christian Pulisic signing and the club's "Loan Army" recall of last season's Championship stars Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Reece James the club has somehow managed to bring in almost £200m worth of talent this summer.

"Frank Lampard has a challenge ahead of him to attain a top four finish, especially with early injuries and the defence looking shaky in pre-season, but there is palpable excitement around the club to see what he and Chelsea's youngsters can do.

"The only action today will likely be the departure of one or two squad players with Tiemoue Bakayoko, Davide Zappacosta and Danny Drinkwater all expendable."

  11. 'Need a destroyer in midfield'published at 07:50 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

    The view from the fans

    Sheffield United

Sam, Dem Blades: "So far this window, Sheffield United have focussed their efforts in the transfer market on attacking players.

"I hope Chris Wilder has the time to turn his attention to bolstering his defensive options. The perfect deadline day would see the Blades bring in a centre-back; Mason Holgate (Everton) is available and would be ideal. We also need a destroyer in midfield.

"Leeds man Kalvin Phillips has been linked, and although he'd slot in perfectly, those rumours seem pretty farfetched. Whatever happens, I think there will be ins and outs; as the phrase in steel city goes, 'in Wilder we trust'."

  17. 'Is there a final twist?'published at 07:26 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

    The view from the fans

    Manchester City

Nigel Rothband, Host of The Man City Show Podcast: "Vincent Kompany's departure, to take on the coaching duties at Anderlecht, will be a huge miss both on and off the field. City didn't pursue Matthijs de Ligt and in Pep's own words, "we couldn't afford Maguire", so it looks as though Laporte, Otamendi and Stones will have to share the central defensive duties.

"Rodri's arrival from Atletico Madrid secures Fernandinho's cover and eventual replacement at last. It should also allow Fernandinho, on occasions, to fill in at centre back.

"The signing of 25 year old Portuguese right back Joao Cancelo from Juventus, with Danilo going the other way and Angelino's return from PSV should complete Pep's transfer business.

"Will there be a final twist on transfer deadline day? If Leroy Sane does go to Bayern Munich, will Pep look to secure a replacement before this window closes? Gareth Bale might be available!"
