    Andy Carroll's return to Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle signing Andy Carroll tells Sky Sports he's living out a bit of a dream and having signed for free on a one-year deal, stresses he has more to offer at the age of 30.

"There's plenty in the tank," he says. "I can't wait to get out there and get started, get in the dressing room, see the lads and enjoy my football.

"I have to bide my time, get fit, get back in the game really and work my way in. If I deserve a starting place that will happen but I have to show I am fit enough to get there first.

"When I put the shirt back on it will probably be a better feeling that it was the first time. It's something I wanted a long time and now it's here.

"Playing for your boyhood team and going away, you realise what you had and missed. Coming back it's something only dreams are made of."

One of the deals catching my eye is yet to be confirmed. David Luiz going to Arsenal from Chelsea.

He is not someone I would immediately think of as being someone who is going to strengthen my defence. Nevertheless he will bring an air of authority.

  8. 'I know it's home'published at 16:56 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

    Newcastle United

“It feels very good. My friends and family are here, and it’s the club that I support – it is home,” said Carroll.

“I enjoyed the time I spent here, and hopefully I can carry on where I left off. When I left eight-and-a-half years ago, I was scoring goals and I was enjoying my football. It’s been a pretty tough time since then, and I just want to get back to that.

“I know it’s home. I’ve played here, I’ve spoken to the fans – I am a fan – and my family is here. For me to get back to where I was, I think this is the only place for me.”

  15. 'Lukaku doesn't play way Solskjaer wants'published at 16:49 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

I think Romelu Lukaku didn't feel that he was wanted at Manchester United. Lukaku doesn't play the way that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to play with quick nimble forwards.

He'd said at the start of the summer he fancied a move abroad. He barely trained during pre-season and Manchester United were frustrated at that. I don't think Solskjaer really thought that he was seriously injured but they could not get him on the pitch.

He didn't play a minute in pre-season and as time has gone on he got more distant with the squad and, United have moved on. He wanted to go somewhere else and in the end it became inevitable.

The 29-year-old was given an extended break following the Africa Cup of Nations. He spent last term on loan at Fenerbahce and was expected to leave once more this summer, but he remains a Swan for now.

  18. 'A very good window for Arsenal'published at 16:43 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

    Arsenal

Akhil Vyas, Arsenal Supporters Trust, Board Member: All in all, a very good window for Arsenal. We were always playing catch up with Aaron Ramsey leaving on a free and had to make tough decisions to let a few others go along with an AWOL captain but I think most fans will be fairly pleased.

David Luiz isn't the CB people would have dreamed of at the start of the window but with Saiba in for the future and the return of Rob Holding and even Calum Chambers, we may 'just' get away with it. Dani Ceballos looks a good fit, for a season anyway and Pepe is that exciting signing every fan dreams off.

Kieran Tierney in theory will fit in very well with Unai Emery's dependency on full-backs creating width. I can only speak for myself here but I think it's been a very good window.

  20. Just a reminder...published at 16:40 British Summer Time 8 August 2019

It's worth pointing out that Premier League clubs can still sell players past today's deadline.

Scottish clubs, England's Leagues One and Two and Europe's top leagues all have a Monday, 2 September deadline.

Spain's La Liga, Italy's Serie A, Germany's Bundesliga and France's Ligue 1 also have transfer deadlines at varying times that day.

That means the likes of Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen and Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba could still be on the move...
