  3. Why Liverpool might need a goalpublished at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2019

    RB Salzburg 0-0 Liverpool

A point will be enough for Liverpool but their defensive record this season suggests they might need to score to get the draw they need.

They have conceded in all five of their group games so far and have kept just one clean sheet in their past 14 matches. The good news for Reds fans is that one came in their most recent outing, against Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Ideozu-Frank Sampson: Would make my day if @LFC bottled up and failed to qualify tonight! After doing what they did against us (Barça) last season, it's natural I've developed a hatred for them!

    RB Salzburg 0-0 Liverpool

Not sure how it is still 0-0.

The maths remain pretty much the same, firmed up by Napoli being 3-0 up.

Liverpool need at least a point, only a win will do for Salzburg. All makes for a potentially explosive second half.

    RB Salzburg 0-0 Liverpool

    Oh, almost.

Salah gathers the ball on the edge of the box and flicks it to his right for the charging Naby Keita, but his little dinked effort is saved by the home keeper.

That'll be the last chance of the half.

Erling Haaland - a goalscorer, but no mean defender either. The ball drops to the striker in his own box as Liverpool attack and he pumps it as far downfield as he can manage.

Francis Edwards: Jurgen Klopp is brilliant but one thing he continues to do is fail at his use of Henderson. Henderson always goes missing in games like this and looks like a shadow since Fabinho got injured. He’s got at pressing and good when their midfielders drop off. That’s it.

Brian Sands: Salah proving too greedy. TAA should be taking deadballs! As captain Henderson should ensure that is the case. Salah just wasting the chance.

Amar Ali: All this talk of Liverpool being beaten on boxing day. Leicester, let's see you get past City the week before first.

    Napoli 3-0 Genk

The Napoli third goal was a penalty, so no surprise to see Milik take it.

Genk's 17-year-old keeper Maarten Vandevoordt was at fault again unfortunately, conceding the spot-kick himself.

He can hit a ball as well can Enock Mwepu. Alisson finds out as he gets behind a snarling drive that hammers into the Liverpool keeper's bread bin from range.

That last Salzburg chance was their first since the opening stages.

Liverpool have been in control of this game since the first 10 or 15 minutes, when Salzburg were attacking them.

Liverpool weathered that storm and now they are dominating.

There are some big, powerful players in this Salzburg side. Enock Mwepu carries the ball at pace down the left and tries to find Erling Haaland, but the ball forward clips the striker's heels and the chance is gone.

Helles Mammut: Liverpool look very nervous and edgy, they know one mistake, one lapse of concentration and the Champions League season could be over today. This is a true final... And people said the group phase was dull and boring..

Khan Karn: Why on earth is Salah taking free kicks? Trent Alexander-Arnold is by far the best on the pitch. Even Henderson is better from close range.

Lator: This game is too open, Liverpool's defence is not compact enough And Salzburg need to put in more grit if they really want to score

    RB Salzburg 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool look to turn the screw with some concerted pressure in the home half. They can't find that killer ball, though, with Alexander-Arnold and Keita both guilty of poor deliveries. Salzburg hammer the ball down the other end, content to reorganise.

Salzburg have yet to perfect the offside von Trapp.

Salah, Trent and Henderson are all over the ball. It is Salah who strikes it, but high and wide. Not brought his shooting boots, the Egyptian.

Liverpool are having plenty of possession, but you wouldn't say they were on top. This Salzburg side are very handy and look dangerous every time they try to hit on the break.

This could be a chance for the Reds, though. They have a free-kick right on the edge of the box after Salah is fouled...
