    FT: Rangers 5-0 Hamilton Academical

So, after an eventful day of Scottish Premiership action, it's rampant Rangers who emerge at the summit.

That's a serious shock, given Celtic were expected to overcome Livingston in West Lothian. The Lions delivered a tremendous performance, aided by Ryan Christie's red card for an awful tackle, and beat the champions 2-0 to climb into the top six.

Rangers took full advantage, shellacking Hamilton Academical 5-0 to unseat their city rivals, and take their goal difference a couple beyond Celtic's benchmark.

A Carlsberg Sunday (other alcoholic beverages are available) for Steven Gerrard and Rangers, who head into the international break atop the table.

We'll be back on Thursday night for live coverage of Scotland's clash with Russia, then again on Sunday, when the national team host San Marino. Thanks for your company, and enjoy the action on Sportscene tonight.

    FT: Rangers 5-0 Hamilton Academical

Here's a wee reminder - if you need one - of what happened at the wonderfully named Tony Macaroni Arena this lunchtime.

Ryan Christie was sent off, before Scott Robinson and Lyndon Dykes scored cracking goals to inflict Celtic's first domestic defeat of the season. Livingston powered into the top six with that very deserved victory.

  5. FULL-TIME Rangers 5-0 Hamilton Academicalpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

Rangers were offered the chance to top the table this afternoon, and they have snatched it in emphatic fashion.

Steven Gerrard's men had more than three-quarters of the possession and peppered the Accies goal with 23 shots, 11 of which were on target.

Jermain Defoe scored a treble, Connor Goldson headed home James Tavernier's cross, and Borna Barisic rocketed in a fine free-kick.

We're only eight games into the season, but given Celtic's form, and the way they dispatched Rangers at Ibrox, overtaking their rivals at the Premiership summit will be very sweet indeed for the Govan side.

  6. Two minutes of stoppage timepublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

    Rangers 5-0 Hamilton Academical

That's almost time up at Ibrox in a completely dominant Rangers display. Accies have nearly been put out of their misery.

  7. Here comes Morelos...published at 16:35 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

    Rangers 5-0 Hamilton Academical

As if the Accies defence haven't been tormented enough, Alfredo Morelos has just come on for Sheyi Ojo. When it rains, it pours...

  8. Murphy makes long-awaited comebackpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

    Rangers 5-0 Hamilton Academical

A sweet moment for Jamie Murphy, who has had such heinous luck with injuries, as he makes his return from over a year out.

Murphy, who suffered a serious see knee injury against Kilmarnock last August, is on for Scott Arfield, with Matt Polster also replacing Steven Davis.

For Accies, Lewis Smith has come on for Adrian Beck, while 17-year-old Jamie Hamilton has replaced Markus Fjortoft.

    Jermain Defoe

It's a hat-trick for Jermain Defoe! Owain Fon Williams saved the initial shot, but in typically predatory fashion, Defoe follows up to net the rebound. That's his second treble of season, having also scored three in a rout of Hibs on the second weekend of the season.

  10. Rampant Rangerspublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

    Rangers 4-0 Hamilton Academical

That second Defoe strike means Rangers have now scored four or more goals in half of their eight Premiership matches this season, and 25 in total. They've been pretty ruthless.

It's not like they've just battered the so-called "wee" teams either. Hibernian took a 6-1 dismantling at Ibrox, while Aberdeen shipped five in Govan last weekend.

    Jermain Defoe

It's another! Jermain Defoe doubles up, and Rangers go 4-0 ahead. This is becoming a turkey shoot. The Englishman fires low into the Accies net from right of centre. Emphatic stuff.

    Borna Barisic

If there was even the tiniest sliver of lingering doubt about the outcome of this match, it's just evaporated.

Up steps Bora Barisic to power a free-kick beyond Owain Fon Williams from 20 yards out.

Rangers will top the Scottish Premiership tonight. It's extremely early days, but that will feel very sweet indeed for Steven Gerrard and his troops.

  13. CLOSE!published at 16:17 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

    Rangers 2-0 Hamilton Academical

Now it's Accies who foray downfield and carve out a chance of their own. Neat stuff from Ciaran McKenna, Ronan Hughes and Adrian Beck create the opportunity, but Steven Davis gets back for Rangers to mop up.

  14. GREAT SAVE!published at 16:13 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

    Rangers 2-0 Hamilton Academical

Lovely interplay from Rangers' attackers culminates in Scott Arfield's shot being saved by Owain Fon Williams.

  15. Gazza's backpublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

    Rangers 2-0 Hamilton Academical

A special moment for ex-Rangers midfielder Paul Gascoigne, who strides on to the Ibrox turf during the interval to a predictably cacophonous ovation.

Rangers are 45 minutes away from top spot in the Scottish Premiership.

Jermain Defoe's delicate chip and Connor Goldson's stooping header have put Steven Gerrard's men in command at the interval.

Victory will send them first in the league, overtaking Celtic after the latter's shock loss at Livingston earlier on today.

  19. Signs of life from Acciespublished at 15:47 British Summer Time 6 October 2019

Better from Hamilton. Alex Gogic's cross is dropped by Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor, but the home side get it clear as Ronan Hughes pursues the loose ball.
