For an hour or so last Saturday it looked like both Liverpool and Manchester City were going to lose. The last time that happened on the same Premier League weekend, let alone the same day, was December 2016.

The two clubs have since elevated themselves to a new plateau, one where dropping points is no longer an option. In the world of the sub-two-hour marathon, the Premier League is now a nine-month sprint.

Last season Manchester City were 10 points behind Liverpool at one point, but this season Liverpool look like a different team.

This is definitely a crucial game, of course we are still in November both teams would want to win it but Liverpool would also take a draw.

But if Man City will win this game they will be on the driving seat, because they know how to win the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola is not concerned about Manchester City's poor Anfield record as they look to move closer to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday.

A home win would put Liverpool - who were pipped to the title by Guardiola's side in May - nine points ahead of City, who have managed one league win at Anfield since 1981.

"Regarding statistics, I don't believe much in that kind of thing," he said. "Statistics are OK but I'm thinking of what we have to do to beat them."

It’s a sizeable game, there is a lot at stake but it is not going to decide who is going to win the title.

I'm not a fan of using superlatives to big up Sunday's football, especially because they rarely often live up to being billed "Super Sunday" etc, but there's definitely some cracking games today.

Before we even settle down for the main course of Liverpool versus Manchester City we have quite meaty starters in the shape of Manchester United against Brighton and the Midlands derby between Wolves and Aston Villa.

If ever there was a day made for putting the feet up and settling down to do nothing other than following football then today is that day.

Liverpool's quest to end a 30-year wait to reclaim the domestic crown that once took almost permanent residency in Anfield's trophy room reaches a defining moment today.

If Jürgen Klopp's side beat Manchester City it will give them a nine-point advantage over the reigning champions at the top of the table, and put them eight clear of both Leicester and Chelsea.

That would effectively mean a Liverpool side that has lost only one of their past 50 league games would need to lose at least three of their next 26 to let City back in.

It is not inconceivable as Liverpool had a 10-point lead over Pep Guardiola's side last season after they had played 20 games, although City had played a game fewer. This season, however, Liverpool seem propelled by an unstoppable momentum.

You can give all the reasons in the world to play down this fixture but there's no doubt about it, Liverpool versus Manchester City has all the makings of being a significant chapter in the Premier League title race.
