Liverpool are eight points clear at the top of the table - and nine ahead of Manchester City - after a pulsating 3-1 win over the champions at Anfield.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Sport: "Congratulations to Liverpool, they scored three, we got one but I'm so proud of my team, few teams can come here and play the way that we did.

"We started incredibly well, we showed incredible bravery, they are the champions of Europe and it is the most difficult stadium in the world. They had two shots and it was two goals.

"It's not easy after being two goals down to react the way we reacted. It was one of the best performances I have ever seen from my team. That's what we needed and hopefully we can continue to make the steps we need."

On Liverpool's first goal: "Ask Mike Riley and his people please."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC Sport: "They were good. Oh they were good and we had to defend with all we had but we scored incredible goals.

"It was so tough to play, the intensity of the game was so clear. It was all worth it, really great. They pass the ball from outside, Sterling. How good did we defend him until then? Because you saw what happens when we don't defend him anymore.

"The boys were completely focused and concentrated. It was so good. It is the only way we can beat City, maybe other teams can do it a different way but this is the only way we can beat them."

Calm for the first goal? "The problem was the VAR. I saw the discussions before the first goal and I was just waiting. It is not the same anymore but it is no problem. I can celebrate tonight.

"All the games against City were pretty much like this apart from last season's home game. That was more controlled. This was not the most beautiful and most controlled but it was very lively, I like that."

"I have not seen it yet. You guys should analyse it not me. If I speak I will be in trouble. I don't want to speak. I have not watched it.

"I think we played one of the best sides in the world, it's never easy in a stadium like Anfield. We had started better than them when we conceded the first goal. First counter, first goal, you cannot give them an inch, because if you do they will take it and score goals.

"It was a good performance but we want to win. Most teams may think they are playing better than Liverpool then at half-time you are losing two or three nil. It's how they play, they are one of the best counter attacking teams in the world.

On the defining moment?

On importance in the title race:

I wasn't expecting this game to live up to its billing but it certainly did and more.

7 points to 9 points isn't a huge gap and Liverpool have some hard away games to go. I think they've played Arsenal, Spurs, Leicester and City at Home , so the fixtures have some challenges for them
