There was one and a half Spurs player offside from the Harry Winks’ cross, the ball was at shoulder height but Roberto did not really come out to claim it.

The goalkeeper rule of thumb is to catch the ball at its highest point.

    West Ham 0-0 Tottenham

You wouldn't describe this as a stellar first 15 minutes. It smacks of two teams short of confidence and keen to ensure they do the simple things right first.

    West Ham 0-0 Tottenham

Roberto is a walking calamity at the moment. He comes out to try and claim Tottenham's free-kick, which is swung into the box, but he looks terrified to be doing so.

Davinson Sanchez beats him to the ball but puts his header just wide. Flag was up as well, though, to somewhat spare the Hammers keeper's blushes.

  4. YELLOW CARDpublished at 11 mins

    West Ham 0-0 Tottenham

First yellow card goes to Issa Diop. He tussles with Harry Kane and is ruled to have held the striker back in the West Ham half. Foul? Possibly. A yellow card? Nah.

    West Ham 0-0 Tottenham

West Ham in the battle now. They're scrapping in the middle of the pitch, winning tackles and giving something for Spurs to think about.

  6. Postpublished at 9 mins

    West Ham 0-0 Tottenham

Chance. West Ham's first bright moment of the game sees Ryan Fredericks whip a cross into the middle, which Sebastien Haller charges in to meet. However, he doesn't connect properly with his header and it deflects off Davinson Sanchez and makes an easy catch for Paulo Gazzaniga.

West Ham have not come out yet to play, they have been quite conscious of keeping their shape.

Declan Rice and Mark Noble are sitting in and giving the two centre-halves a bit of early protection.

    West Ham 0-0 Tottenham

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the London Stadium

Jose Mourinho has already taken two long walks from the dug-out to the edge of his technical area and back.

It is about 20 paces. If he keeps going at that rate he will have covered a fair distance by the final whistle.

  9. Postpublished at 6 mins

    West Ham 0-0 Tottenham

It is not the prettiest start, but Tottenham have had the better of it. West Ham yet to settle or have any meaningful possession in the Spurs half.

Harry Kane is caught offside from another run to collect a Dele Alli pass. He left his marker way too easily, but just a fraction early. West Ham playing with fire.

In the net! But ruled out.

Mourinho almost gets the perfect start as Harry Winks plays in Harry Kane to fire a shot into the roof of the net. Flag is up, though. The England skipper moved a second too early.

    West Ham 0-0 Tottenham

As an indication of how bad things had become at Spurs, they are winless in five league matches, their worst spell since a run of six between December 2008 and January 2009.

They are also without a victory in 12 away league games dating back to January, and have equalled the club Premier League record of 13 away matches without a clean sheet.

However, West Ham have gone six league matches without a win themselves, losing four and drawing two.

If Liverpool's contentious Champions League final penalty hadn't been given last season, might Mauricio Pochettino still be in a job?

It's not the most drastic downfall of a manager from Europe's peak. Bayern's Jupp Heynckes won the 2013 trophy yet was immediately replaced by Pep Guardiola. But Heynckes knew that was coming. Pochettino didn't. This was brutal. The club's failure to clear out disgruntled wantaways undermined him.

Tottenham fans hated Jose Mourinho at Chelsea. He'll have to hit the ground running. Jimmy Greaves knew that when he made the same trip, via Italy. He hit a hat-trick on his debut.

If Mourinho has the same impact, pressure will mount for Manuel Pellegrini. He badly needs a win. This will be as fierce as they come.

    Mark Lawrenson
    Ex-Liverpool defender

Whatever happens long term, Jose Mourinho will give Spurs a lift straight away - he is a different voice, and gives them a fresh approach.

It is going to be interesting to see the way Spurs play, and I don't mean just in terms of their performance against West Ham. I mean in the subtle changes that he might make, if any, to their shape and their playing style.

    Prediction: 1-1

  15. 'Mourinho will be pragmatic'published at 12:24 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2019

I don’t know what Mourinho's approach will be today but I suspect he will be pragmatic.

Let’s not forget Spurs have not won a trophy in 11 years and if Mourinho does it his way and sits a piece of silverware in that empty trophy cabinet in that new stadium he’ll become a bit more popular with the fans.

He gave all the right answers on his first press conference, he spoke about learning from his mistakes and maybe he realises he needs to be even smarter than what he is to have the Spurs fans on his side as he is replacing somebody very popular.

As a Spurs fan I was a huge admirer of Poch, but, having looked at the bigger picture, I am happy that we now have Mourinho. This has just been vindicated by two things on the team sheet. Sissoko is on the bench and Lucas Moura is starting the game. For me, they are two positives already. We must look to the future, let's get behind the new regime whatever our personal opinions. COYS.

    Martin, Lytham

Feel like Poch going is 'out with the new and in with the old!'. That said, something needed to be done to arrest the slide, I just hope we get the good Jose and not the miserable one!

  17. VARy interestingpublished at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2019

It wouldn't be a Premier League weekend without some sort of VAR shenanigans.

Hopefully, it won't be as chaotic as during the two weeks leading up to the international break, during which there were four instances of the "worst possible outcome" of the video assistant referee system, according to Premier League referees chief Mike Riley.

Riley told a meeting of the 20 top-flight clubs that on those occasions VAR had overruled perfectly good decisions by the on-field officials.

"We are far from perfect and we have to improve the way we do things," he said.

Riley's assistant Neil Swarbrick gave the system a mark of seven out of 10.

Don't let the calm and charm of Mourinho's first press conference as Tottenham boss fool you, he's got a big, stressful job on his hands in north London.

There are a whole host of things wrong with Spurs at the moment. Daniel Levy clearly felt Mauricio Pochettino was one of them and has put that right. We've drawn up a short list of things Jose now has to deal with in his new role.

All of Mourinho's other PL jobs he's had a pre-season and the chance to bring people in - he's never had to come in mid season and stop the rot at a club. Be very interesting to see if he can manage it.

I don’t know many modern managers who have changed a club like Mauricio Pochettino has. I think there are so many fans out there that are livid he has gone. They are just completely gutted and I do not blame them.
