    Jack Grealish

Lifeline for Villa! Or is it?

Jack Grealish sweeps into the bottom right corner from the other side of the box. A finish as bright as his new blond highlights.

I'd be very underwhelmed if I'd driven from the Steel City to Norwich today. Horrible drive. Blades' performance isn't much better.

Norwich have controlled the first half and nearly double their lead at the death when Mario Vrancic - on his first Premier League start - almost trickles in.

  4. HALF-TIMEpublished at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2019

    Newcastle 0-0 Southampton

Federico Fernández loops a header into Alex McCarthy's hands as Newcastle manage a shot on goal on the stroke of half time.

    Not a classic.

Leicester are ruthless. Villa have been doing plenty of digging but the Foxes’ slick, counter-attacking football is wonderful to watch and, at this rate, you wouldn’t back against an eighth Premier League win on the spin here. That pocket of travelling fans is getting lively.

    Newcastle 0-0 Southampton

James Ward-Prowse is the first player to go in the referee's book as he goes in very late on Miguel Almiron.

Newcastle have a free kick which Jonjo Shevley takes but the ball in is too high for his team-mates and drifts out of play.

One minute added on. If I were in the stands I'd be straight out for a half-time pie. You are not missing anything in this one.

Leicester have been better in both boxes.

Great work from Maddison and a great run from Iheanacho: he has improved massively under Rodgers and now he’s showing the talent he had at Manchester City.

I like the centre-forwards who run across the box and that’s where they score the goals.

GOAL - Aston Villa 0-2 Leicesterpublished at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2019

    Kelechi Iheanacho

This why they paid £25m for him!

It's taken a long while for Kelechi Iheancho to make a telling impact for Leicester but now he's scored two vital goals in two weeks.

After bagging the winner last Sunday, the Nigerian striker puts the Foxes well on their way to another winner with a clinical finish at Villa Park.

Patient build-up from Leicester down the left before James Maddison drops a gear, speeds into the box and delivers a beauty of a cross.

Daniel: Leicester are too lightweight to win the League. They lack a few star players. They also lack squad depth and experience of a premier league title race.

Now let's watch Dean Smith yet again struggle to find plan B. In the relegation zone and he is not the man to keep us up. Why we rewarded our struggling with a new lengthy contract?

What a block! Villa's Bjorn Engels comes to the rescue with another last-ditch sliding tackle to stop that Leicester break.

    All Leicester.

    Aston Villa 0-1 Leicester

Villa's bid to break down the league's meanest defence has just got tougher. They are huffing and puffing but can't blow the house down.

Ahmed El Mohamady tries to do it all himself in the Foxes box, but is crowded out, then gets another chance, and plays it square to Leicester's Dennis Praet.

Groans all around Villa Park. It could get worse. Leicester break...

A ripple of applause from the home fans as Allan Saint-Maximin fires a cross in towards the far post but it drifts just over the head of Javier Manquillo.

If anything is going to happen for Newcastle you can bet Saint-Maximin will be involved. He has been their only creative spark so far in this game.

Delia looks happy in the Carrow Road posh seats. Clearly enjoyed her Sunday lunch. And the fact she has seen Alexander Tettey score his first Premier League goal since January 2016. A whole 1436 days ago!

I don’t think any of Villa’s centre-halves can match Vardy for pace. He’s causing them a lot of problems.

The game is high tempo. It is a good derby, proper tackles going in but fair tackles.

More one-way traffic than Spaghetti Junction at the moment. And it's all heading to the Villa goal.

Jamie Vardy drills low at Tom Heaton moments after the opening goal, then sees his cross intercepted by a sliding Bjorn Engels.

Still Leicester motor forward, another attack down the left ending with Ben Chilwell's cross being cleared.

Danny Ings slips the ball through to Shane Long but the forward is superbly tackled by Federico Fernández just as he is about to shoot.

You sense Southampton are edging closer to a goal.

Francis: Seriously naive to set up like this against a team who are 2nd who thrive against playing teams who set up like this. The Villa manager never gets stick but Steve Bruce gets it all the time and look at the difference in league position

Says a lot about the job Rodgers is doing that he's even managing to get a tune out of Iheanacho, it's probably the first time he's scored / assisted in consecutive games since they bought him.

Danny Ings tries to bundle his way into the area but he runs into team-mate Ryan Bertrand and they both go tumbling to the floor.

Kinda sums up the quality of this game so far, to be fair.

  19. goal

    Alexander Tettey

    Now here's a blockbuster scene!

From a Norwich corner on the right, Blades don't clear properly and Canaries skipper Alexander Tettey sweeps in a clean strike with his left peg.

Sheffield United appeal for a foul on David McGoldrick by Christoph Zimmermann before the ball broke to Tettey. A cursory glance at VAR..the computer says no.
