  1. goal

GOAL - Burnley 0-1 Aston Villapublished at 12:58 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2020

    Wesley (27 mins)

Justice? Villa lead after all and it's a very good move indeed after some more ponderous defending form Burnley.

Jack Grealish and Wesley play a neat one-two on the edge of the area, Grealish clips it into the striker who takes it on his chest and then hits a shot through the legs of Nick Pope.

The system as it stands really is ruining the game, I don't think that's an exaggeration any more. It was meant to stop howlers. Instead it's ruling out perfectly fine goals as we all understand it.

There isn't a man, woman or child alive who would have watched that Jack Grealish goal and thought it should have been chalked off.

Sway Cricket Club: VAR had created unintended consequences... but lets wait till end of season and have a full review.

Ian George: We may as well do away with refs completely and let VAR run the game. Mind you all matches would be at least two hours long !!

Tom McQuillin: Re. Jon (12:49) - that Villa decision isn’t even something we would have described as ‘getting a major decision wrong’! For every 1 major decision they fix, they correct 99 decisions that no one asked them to.

  4. Postpublished at 12:55 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2020

It's, it's not going well is it? That's so many dubious goals chalked off in the last week alone. Enough is enough?

Tom Sharpe: VAR is a fantastic piece of technology that should be a terrific addition to the game...but the use of it in football is so questionable and awful that every other game that uses it must look at football like its an idiot.

Adam Heap: I’m a Burnley fan and whether it’s ‘scientifically offside’ or not, that VAR can be used like that is just wrong. I’d be happier for Villa to have that goal.

Observantonlooker: Another shocking #VAR, external decision. Supporters voices need to be heard to get this rule and the use of this flawed technology stopped. #STOPVAR, external#bbcfootball, external#BURAVL, external The only thing that's clear and obvious is that #VAR, external is ruining football.

Chelsea's passing and movement has been excellent. Their full backs have got right down the pitch and are causing problems.

Scott Smith: I’m a Birmingham City fan and even I think that VAR decision against Aston Villa was harsh.

Dane: Marginal VAR offsides are anti-football. Why wait for their next fancy meeting to sort it? Convene a meeting now and change it. It’s clearly ruining game after game.

Mark Davies: VAR is a joke and it is ruining game after game. Goal line checks only. That's it! Ridiculous call at Burnley. It is not as if officials make loads of errors anyway.

Dan Burn can't continue - it actually looks like he may have dislocated a joint in his arm which could be a lengthy spell out.

He walks off and Bernardo is the man coming on.

  10. GREAT SAVE!published at 12:51 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2020

    Burnley 0-0 Aston Villa

Aston Villa have every right to feel aggrieved but they react well, Jack Grealish playing in Wesley on the overlap and his shot is kicked away by Nick Pope, who then saves well from Douglas Luiz.

Jon Evans: I hate football with VAR. Prefer the refs getting major decisions wrong. It's not football anymore.

Adam: Another goal that can't be fully celebrated by players or fans in the stadium at the time - no one predicted how much damage #VAR, external would do to what football is about; the enjoyment of scoring goals.

=: Before people complain... again....this is an issue with the offside rule, not VAR.

To try and describe that a bit better, Wesley was walking back away from goal when he went up for a header that he didn't win. A slither, and I mean a tiny, tiny piece of shoe leather, was ruled to be offside as he did so. They had to draw so many lines on the screen that you could barely work out what was going on.

IT WAS NOT OFFSIDE AS WE ALL UNDERSTAND IT. Let the goal stand.
