I can't say I came to work today expecting this one to be a 3-3 draw but we can hope.

There are one or two nervous faces in the crowd at the Vitality. Everyone loves a six pointer, don't they? Apart from the teams involved, of course.

  2. More 'Sunday League defending' to come?published at 13:49 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2020

    Bournemouth v Watford (14:00 GMT)

With both sides making two changes in defence, both managers will hope for a tighter performance than the madcap 3-3 draw here between these sides a year and 10 days ago.

Watford had led 2-0 before an unbelievable spell of four goals in six minutes before the interval - Hornets captain Troy Deeney said afterwards "the defending from both teams was Sunday League at best".

    Well, it's Sunday today...

WFCtalk: It’s got to be the one and only Graham Taylor He completely transformed our club from a small club in Watford to a club playing in Europe. Three years on from that sad day and we will never forget him. There’s only one GT.

Pulkit Bhuwalka: Michael Edwards for Liverpool. Doesn't get enough credit. Gini, Robbo, Shaq are great examples of the shrewd business he has done and saved us from making expensive mistakes.

There is no rumours that Eddie Howe is going to go anywhere. The biggest problem is their list of injuries. You can look round at who else could come in and do a job and get them out of it but would it change that much? You can only play with the players you have got and the best players are injured. The injury list is a joke. Stick to someone who knows the players, knows the club, knows how to get them out of it. He has an attachment and the fans like him.

Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith says Jonathan Kodjia is doubtful due to illness.

Matt Targett returns after a hamstring injury while new loanee Danny Drinkwater could make his debut.

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson should return to the starting line-up for his first appearance since he was sent off against Wolves on 27 December.

Long-term absentee Leroy Sane remains on the sidelines but Aymeric Laporte will return to full training next week.

Aston Villa will be in the bottom three by the time they kick-off against Manchester City at 16:30 GMT, if there is a winner on the south coast.

City may need a collapse of England cricketing proportions to catch Liverpool but they can still go second today with a win.

Villa's win against Burnley in their last league game was big. But can they manage with all of their injuries against City?

  11. The 'Luther Blissett derby'?published at 13:28 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2020

    Bournemouth v Watford (14:00 GMT)

    Mark Mitchener
    BBC Sport at Vitality Stadium

Striker Luther Blissett is a true Watford legend, holding the club record for most appearances and most goals, across three spells between 1975 and 1993. However, he is still fondly remembered by Bournemouth supporters of a certain age, having fired 56 goals for the Cherries in three seasons under Harry Redknapp, in between his second and third Watford spells.

Luther himself tweeted, external before the corresponding match at Vicarage Road in October that Watford v Bournemouth was "Blissett derby day". I suspect he may be here today - a spotter's badge to anyone who can locate him.

Southampton have had many heroes over the decades, but Marcus Liebherr is the one that's made the difference that I've personally seen. From seriously wondering which team I'd support if Saints went under, I saw Saints win at Wembley, followed by back to back promotions to the Premier League, followed by introducing the high press to the English game, followed by playing at Wembley in finals and semi-finals, as well as European tours. All on the back of the kindness and generosity of one man. There aren't many owners that have the crowd chant their name, let alone former owners, but Marcus Liebherr is one of them

Watford are one of the Premier League's form teams.

They were bottom of the table, six points from safety before Nigel Pearson's first game in charge.

Since then they have taken 10 points from a possible 15 and are four games unbeaten.

Win today and Pearson will have the Hornets outside of the bottom three.

  17. Ake & Smith back, Mepham & Ramsdale outpublished at 13:13 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2020

    Bournemouth v Watford (14:00 GMT)

    Mark Mitchener
    BBC Sport at Vitality Stadium

Eddie Howe hinted on Friday that he could welcome back one or two of his walking wounded - and the team sheet brings confirmation that Nathan Ake and Adam Smith return to the defence, having missed six and seven matches respectively.

But in terms of the Cherries treatment room it's two in, two out, as centre-back Chris Mepham faces three months out with a knee problem, while keeper Aaron Ramsdale misses his first league game of the season with what the club describes as "a minor injury".
