This is sensational football. The ball is played through five or six pairs of feet before Gabriel Jesus has a shot saved.

Moments later, the Brazilian has an even easier chance but he puts it wide. I was just waiting for the net to bulge.

This is a hard watch for the majority of a 40,000-plus crowd at Villa Park.

But fair play to the majority of home fans, who have stayed with their team and kept singing when all hope was long gone.

This could be an EFL Cup final rehearsal of course.

We're still waiting for Aston Villa to have a shot on target. They swing a cross in from the right but with no recognised striker on the pitch there is no-one to hit in the middle. City are up to 71.6% possession.

They are still going for it Manchester City. They are going in search of more goals. They are ruthless. They manage games as they see fit. It's as if they see this game as an opportunity to score goals.

    Aston Villa 0-5 Man City

Man City are so good to watch in full flow. They go from one end to the other in a sweeping move but Phil Foden gets his first-time shot wrong.

Gareth Southgate is watching on. Jack Grealish hasn't been able to get into the game today if that's who he's here to see.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 73 mins

    Aston Villa 0-5 Man City

Villa are without their first-choice goalkeeper, best central midfielder and first-choice striker, remember.

Two more subs. Ilkay Gundogan is on for Rodri and Trezeguet replaces Conor Hourihane for Villa.

Philip West: If this is the net result of what the huge spending of last summer has bought Aston Villa, they’re in dire trouble. They’ve been absolutely woeful in this game.

Villa fan annoyed here. Smith needs to go. I don't care it's Man City, we are an embarrassment to the name Aston Villa. Jack save your career and move as Smith is clueless and relegating us. We are the poorest team in the league.

Sergio Aguero and Riyad Mahrez are hunting hat-tricks. The Algerian has a pop from the edge of the box but sees his shot blocked. John Stones is currently the only outfield player in the Man City half.

Aston Villa have made a sub with Marvelous Nakamba on for Douglas Luiz. It was a difficult day for the midfielder but he's not alone on that front.

It's the tempo of passing that really sets Manchester City apart. Kevin de Bruyne starts rifling in passes to people. It's like they have a power play for 20/30 minutes of really intense play. They did it in the first half too. Here at 5-0 up, they are still dominating, they are still annoyed when they get things wrong. It's what sets them apart.

Aleksander Pagels: Aguero said he'll leave Man City in summer 2021. That gives him 1 and a half season to go past Wayne Rooney in 2nd place with most PL goals. He'll do it, and he'll leave the country with only one man having scored more goals in the Prem. All of which in just 10 years.

That was utterly predictable from Sergio Aguero.

At half-time he spent quite a long time talking to Riyad Mahrez, wanting to know why he had not set him up for a chance just before the break.

Then when a cross was cut out just before it reached him, he held his hands up in despair. After that he had a shot saved and now he has scored again.

    Aguero is utterly relentless.

    Sergio Aguero

    Record-breaker!

Sergio Aguero overtakes Thierry Henry to become the highest-scoring foreign player in Premier League history.

He collects a pass from David Silva, skips past one challenge and finds the bottom corner from inside the box. Clinical.

Aston Villa have shown much more intent to defend in the second half. They have wanted to be first to the ball in the penalty area, they have not allowed Manchester City to have easy possession so Dean Smith will be pleased about the start to the second half.

Aston Villa really aren't helping themselves. Orjan Nyland makes a regulation save but then throws the ball out straight to a Man City player. Fortunately he gets down to catch Cancelo's cross.
