Now they've had another shot. Villa build a rare attack and from the left edge of the box Anwar El Ghazi tries to find the far top corner but his effort never troubles Ederson in the City goal.

Manchester City have hardly put a foot wrong so far this game. Aston Villa are looking a little bit more organised now which Dean Smith has to be pleased with. After Manchester City got the first goal, you knew they would step it up and boy they did and just shocked Villa.

Dale Topley: Is this a training exercise? Teams become so intent on sitting back defending and not pressing against teams like Man City and Liverpool that it becomes a matter of when not if they score, teams that do well actually try to win the ball back and attack

Almost. I thought this was in and so did a couple of thousand Man City fans at Villa Park. Silva comes within a few inches of finding the top corner with the free-kick.

Aston Villa are desperate to give Jack Grealish the ball, he is the shining light of this team. It's got to be hard. He's expected to do everything by himself. He's hardly touched the ball so far.

I'd say Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland could have done better with the first and third goals.

City now have a chance to test him with a free-kick from 25 yards out. David Silva is eyeing it up.

  8. Pepe Reina in the standspublished at 17:05 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2020

Aston Villa new-boy Pepe Reina is watching this from the stands.

Reina has joined Villa on loan from AC Milan. I think it is fair to assume he will be starting at Brighton next Saturday.

The only other time an away team has scored three goals in the opening 30 minutes this season was that Leicester win at Southampton.

Could Leicester's 9-0 away record be under threat here?

    Andy, Telford

Dean Smith quite possibly way out of his league just like Drinkwater

There are Aston Villa fans leaving their seats. I don't know whether they're going home or just going for a pint but it's telling.

Ash Williams: Drinkwater again at fault for the third. Let De Bruyne turn too easily and jogged back. Great strike though by Aguero.

Rachel T: Target practice for City. Villa are appalling!

That's the record-equalling goal for Sergio Aguero. It's his 175th Premier League goal, taking him level with Thierry Henry.

One more and he'll be the league's highest-scoring foreign player.

    Aston Villa 0-3 Man City

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Manchester City have come here with real intent to take the three points home with them this afternoon. Yes Aston Villa are at home and they are a slightly weakened side but Manchester City have taken no prisoners. Sergio Aguero is just fantastic.

Andrew Priestley: Drinkwater not up to the pace of PL football after his sabbatical it seems.

There was an obligatory VAR check before Manchester City could celebrate their goal.

Both sets of fans sang their opposition to it afterwards - the City supporters following up with 'It's not football any more'.

It will be interesting to see whether this fan reaction has any influence at the IFAB meeting in Belfast on 29 February when rule changes will be discussed.

My word. Aston Villa fans must be watching this from behind the sofa. Gabriel Jesus now fires over from the edge of the box after good play down the left.

  20. 'Manchester City have pounced'published at 16:55 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2020

    Aston Villa 0-2 Man City

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

From a Manchester City point of view that's a really good goal but Aston Villa really have shot themselves in the foot. That's two occasions where Aston Villa have had possession in the area and they have not cleared and Manchester City have pounced. Aston Villa cannot give the ball away and not be punished.
