  1. Rashford not available 'in next few weeks'published at 16:17 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2020

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, speaking on Sky Sports, on Marcus Rashford's back injury: "He got knocks and jolted against Wolves and aggravated his back. We will give him time before we put him back on the pitch. I wouldn't expect to be having him in the next few weeks."

On today's line-up: "We have to come to a difficult place, we try to maximise the players we have available. I think we have a chance to give them some trouble."

The truth is these teams are playing in different leagues. We have a Manchester United team that is playing at Europa League level. They are trying to catch Chelsea for a Champions League place. And then we have Liverpool - a team competing at the top level. The world and European champions who are going to win the Premier League by a stretch. That is shown in the massive contrast between both line-ups.

I think what people tend to forget with Jordan Henderson is that he was almost given the poison chalice. One of Liverpool’s greatest ever players retired and then you always have to answer the question ‘Are you as good as Steven Gerrard?’ No is the answer. When people look on the pitch and complain he is not doing what Stevie does and I think it was quite harsh on him. Where Klopp is brilliant is that Jordan is asked to do what he is very good at not what Stevie was good at. He has a really good understanding of the job. Over the last two year he has massively evolved. He belongs now. He belongs in the history.

Chris Walker: The biggest sign this is the worst PL of all time is shown by the fact that the team in fifth place has won just 40% of their games. To have such a low win percentage in such a high position says no team has the quality or mentality to sustain good results.

The 2019/20 league contains: - the worst Arsenal side of my lifetime, the worst United side since 87/88, the worst Chelsea side since 95/96, the worst Spurs side since 07/08, the worst City side since 15/16 and the worst Everton side since 18/19.

  5. 'I want to bring success back to this club'published at 16:14 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2020

Liverpool v Man Utd (16:30 GMT)

    Manchester United

Harry Maguire, 26, talking to BBC Radio 5 Live on becoming the youngest post-war Manchester United captain: “I just had a quiet word from the manager. He just told me to carry on what I’m doing. It’s something that I a looking forward to but my responsibility really is being successful for the team and it always has been ever since I signed.”

On what kind of captain he hopes to be: “Leading my example is the main thing. Taking responsibility on and off the field is another. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some excellent captains and learn from them throughout my career to date, so I will take little traits from everyone and hopefully put them all together to become the best captain I can. The bottom line is I want to bring success back to this club.”

On taking on the top teams: “We’ve been a bit too inconsistent this year. That has been our problem. But against the top teams we have been really good, apart from the first half against Arsenal. They put us under a lot of pressure and we need to handle it a lot better than we did that day. At Anfield it will be the same. The atmosphere will be up and they will be trying to out us under pressure and we need to handle that a lot better.”

On taking on Liverpool at Anfield: “The louder the atmosphere the better. It’s a great ground to go and play at and it’s a great ground to go and get a result at. You have got to embrace these moments. You want to play in the big games, the high pressure games. Go out, look around in the tunnel, embrace the atmosphere and go and perform on the stage where, if you score the winning goal or get a great result it will be remembered in years to come.”

Ar Vind: As a Liverpool fan, this one fixture always brings a tingle down the spine. Form and squad strength are irrelevant when these two giants meet. Anything can happen.

Bob Moss: The question is can the 1-0-9 formation work for Utd today to sneak a draw.

Phil Beck: Re Michael Reid, 15.33: if United try and "have a go", they may score one, but could concede 5. I know it's a derby but that doesn't mean a sensible game plan requiring patience should change. Plus, the selection is unfortunately largely dictated by injuries.

A group of Japanese fans are in the front row of one of the upper tiers of Anfield's towering Main Stand attempting to attract the attention of Liverpool new boy Takumi Minamino by shouting him as he warms up.

It is a brave effort but would seem doomed to failure barring the introduction of a microphone or a loud hailer.

For me Manchester United’s future all rests on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and what he can do with that group of players. You can have top players at a club but can you get them playing and challenging this Liverpool team? Liverpool looks like it will dominate English football like Manchester United did in the 90s.

I think Ole has really picked things up, especially from the position they are in the league. The reality is Manchester United want Champions League football and they are five points off that. He has done a great job of where they are at. It’s doable.

When I look at the team and their style of play, do I think that style can win a title? No. I have not seen it yet in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. I don’t see that style of play that can go and constantly compete with the best.

  10. Solskjaer without Rashfordpublished at 16:05 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2020

Huge blow for Manchester United to be without Marcus Rashford here at Anfield - he has failed to recover from the back injury he sustained after coming on as a substitute in the FA Cup win against Wolves.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must now hope he is not out for too long but it is a concern given his influence and importance this season.

This rivalry is steeped in history. United will come here (to Anfield) and know their backs are against the wall as they go into the lions' den, but it's one of those that if they could win, with the way the season has gone, it would be such a memorable day for them.

Manchester United are the only team to have taken points from Liverpool since March last year, but you'd have to be crazy to think they will do it again, wouldn't you?

Well, even leaving aside things you really can't gauge - history and the 'football gods' - there is one other immeasurable but more real factor in their favour, and that is United's ability to raise their game in the really big ones. They're unbeaten in the Premier League this season against the current top four, winning away in the Manchester derby in December.

Even that seems a long time ago now however, as does any thought of Liverpool not cantering to their first league title since 1990.

They'll have to be miles off their game not to win it - that's this game and the league.

Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope speaking to Sky Sports: "It's a massive win for us. The lads worked so hard and the atmosphere was electric. You go on bad runs during the season so to snap them quickly is important. To lose four on the spin is hard, but to go a goal down and react like we did against a good team like is great."

Burnley goalscorer Ashley Westwood, also speaking to Sky Sports: "I don't get many, it is something I have to add to my game. But it's all about working hard, the team spirit came out in the end and it's a great win for us."
