  2. 'Players are fighting for each other'published at 20:09 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2019

    Southampton 0-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham's Mark Noble speaking to Sky Sports: I thought Michail Antonio and Sebastian Haler were were brilliant. Antonio controlled the game and Haller needed that goal, I am so pleased for him. They played really well off each other. When Antonio is playing like he is tonight, there is no stopping him.

"We looked a lot more compact tonight. When you win not so pretty like that, it gives you a lot more confidence because the players are fighting for each other. It was such an important win for us. Sometimes we need to start attacks from the defence and I think that's really important. It builds confidence in the team that we can defend and we can build. You don't get anything in this league if you don't try hard."

  3. 'We were not clinical enough'published at 20:06 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2019

    Southampton 0-1 West Ham

    Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl speaking to Sky Sports: “When you don’t score at home when you have so many chances to do so, it’s not good. We had more chances than we have had in recent games. It is difficult to defend long balls to Sebastian Haller he is so strong. We changed the shape in the second half and we were much better. It was a physically tough game for us, we had chances but today we were not clinical enough.

“It was a big chance to move out of the relegation zone and we did not take it. That’s why we are frustrated. We tried everything in the second half and now we have to look forward to the game against Villa and we have to win that.

“We know that there is a long time until the end of the season. It will not be decided until April/May and we will continue fighting each week. We try to develop our game each week. We could have got points today but we didn’t and now we fight back.”

  4. 'I've felt everyday the commitment from the players'published at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2019

    Southampton 0-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini, speaking to MOTD: "We had the reaction against Chelsea after that for different reason we couldn't win. We saw a similar game here as against Chelsea. We defended well, were solid and also tried to score and win the game. We did it.

"When you have six points when you have to play away against Chelsea and Southampton I think six points is not bad."

On whether he felt he was under pressure: "I can't divide myself from the team. For West Ham it was an important three points. Maybe we have had a difficult moment but I have never lost trust in what we do. I don't read the media but I am not stupid. I always focus on the win.

"I said before the game that I felt everyday the commitment of the players in the work that they do. I am happy for the players. We started the season very well and I hope now we have recovered our best performance for the next games."

  5. 'We need to win these games'published at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2019

    Southampton 0-1 West Ham

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to MOTD: "To stay in the league we need to win these home wins against these type of opponents.

"We know we have a difficult situation but we have seen a team fighting for three points but today we were not good enough.

"We knew it would be a very tough game for us. In the first half we had big problems with the long balls. We changed it at half-time and in the second half I thought we had the better chances.

"We took more risks in the second half - we had to.

"I saw a team fighting until the end and fighting to turn the tables but it was not possible for us. We need to fight more and try to win more."

  6. 'We needed that win'published at 19:54 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2019

    Southampton 0-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini speaking to Sky Sports: “I think that was a game we needed to win and we did well. The last few games we have been away and we are happy. We got six points from the away games. We are missing points at home and that’s the difference at the moment.”

On Haller and Antonio’s partnership: “I think that both of them worked really in attacking. We knew that Southampton concede goals. Both of them had different actions, Antonio is always running to the space and Haller always slows the ball down and they complement each other. We had a few more chances too. Antonio is an important player as is so many of the players we are missing. We know he makes an impact. He can improve more and I think we will see him score more. Both of them played a complete game both defending and attacking.”

On the importance of the result: “We won and added three points and it is always important that we keep a clean sheet. We need to be consistent for 90 minutes and I think that we were closer to that today. We now have 10 days so maybe we can recover some players.”

  7. 'Massive win'published at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2019

    Southampton 0-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham forward Sebastien Haller, speaking to MOTD: "We are a group, the manager, the staff and the team. Of course we are happy for him (Manuel Pellegrini).

"It was really frustrating last week. Today was a massive win, a massive performance and I hope this goal will give a lot of confidence for myself and the team.

"I'm really happy because I do not really score a lot with my left foot."

  10. 'It was a frustrating game'published at 19:43 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2019

    Southampton 0-1 West Ham

    Southampton

Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy: "We did not start the game very well. I thought second half we showed more and had chances. We thought we could come away with a point at last. We started slow and conceding that early goal was not what we wanted.

"It was frustrating and to pick up points would have been massive. We created a lot of chances second half but we need to be more clinical and taking them going forwards. It’s very frustrating, we knew how important the game was. Confidence is fine. It’s not where we want to be. We can get ourselves out it and we will work hard."

  11. 'Both teams lacked confidence'published at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2019

    Southampton 0-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham goalscorer Sebastien Haller speaking to Sky Sports: "It was not an easy game. Both teams had little confidence and that showed. It was so important that we got the three points today, we had to defend hard in the second half. It’s been a while since I scored, it was a really important one. Let’s hope we score even more now."

Michail Antonio also proposed a bit of a radical solution to avoid getting goals chalked off for handball...

"I think I'm going to cut my hands off," he tells Sky Sports "It happened to me at Chelsea and it happened to me today. It is like they are magnets or something."

  13. 'It was a massive game'published at 19:36 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2019

    Southampton 0-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham's Michail Antonio speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a massive three points. The performances that we have done in the last few weeks have been good but we have not got the results. Today we have managed to do that. We have so much respect for the manager and it is good that we seem to be coming out of the blip. Now we just need to keep moving forward and getting more points."

The win that saves Manuel Pellegrini's job?

He was reportedly under huge pressure ahead of this weekend but that looked to me to be a performance from a group of players who were fighting for their manager.

Former Charlton Athletic defender on BBC Radio London

They are flooding out of St. Marys, the fans are so disillusioned and disappointed. Southampton have given it a go in the last 10 minutes but what have they got to lose? They had to show some sort of spirit. Up until that point, it was a really limp performance.
