"That knowledge of Arsenal is undoubtedly one of the factors which attracted the club's board to appoint him and he will need every bit of experience gained from his time with Guardiola because, in a nutshell, so much of the team needs changing.

"It will help Arteta that he is strong-minded, a man with a set of principles that are non-negotiable."

Wijsheid: Arteta just gave a life lecture. I pray it works for him at Arsenal. But, going by his attitude, discipline and story, he will do incredibly well in his coaching career even if the results at Arsenal don’t come out as expected.

Arteta has been an important figure for Arsenal, the captain. He played a lot of good football for us and I wish him all the best because he has been a top player.

I hope he can extrapolate all his knowledge into Arsenal, into the club and I hope that it gets it back to the winning ways. I wish him all the best in future and also for the whole institution.

On whether Freddie Ljungberg will be part of his coaching staff

I need to sit down and have a proper conversation with him. I didn’t believe today was the right day because we’d only have 10 minutes. We might need eight hours to explain the situation, see what are his aims and what he’s seen from the players. We will grab a coffee - maybe a bowl of coffee - and make the decision.

On what he advised Ljungberg about tomorrow's game

I said 'you know the players, do what you feel'. I said what I wanted from them and that’s it.

On when his coaching staff will be announced

That’s not in my hands. It's with lawyers and paperwork. The timescale has been hectic. I had games at City. It will be announced very shortly.

Why did he make the move now?

Sometimes in this industry you can have a plan and an idea of how to develop. And then emotions get involved. When Arsenal knock the door, and it touches my heart, it makes it very difficult [to say no].

It was a very difficult decision. But I felt the club needed someone to appoint. They were so convinced they wanted me that I said I have to take the challenge.

The relationship between Pep Guardiola and me is incredibly good. He was sad and the timing wasn’t the best for him but he understood. He knows how I’ve been growing and the needs I had emotionally and the ambitons I had.

He kept giving me more over the years. I couldn’t explain what a nice person he is. He knew I was suffering because I was living in a moment where they need me a little bit as well. I felt a little bit sad. He’s been so supportive. The relationship couldn’t be any better.

I said goodbye to the staff yesterday and I cried because they’ve been my family for three and a half years and we had incredible moments. We had a dream to do something in England with Pep that people said we couldn’t do – they said we’d get bullied. We did it in the way we believed. We will share those feelings for the rest of our lives.

To set targets at the moment isn’t what I would like to do. I’d like to take it day by day. The ambiton of this club is clear – you have to be in Europe and fight for trophies. The rest is not good enough. Now to talk about this is a little bitt far. I’d like to talk about what we’ll do tomorrow.

Mesut Ozil is a massive player for this club. I want to understand what the players are feeling and what they need. You have to understand them. When you understand them I can take the excuses out of them and focus on the relevant things to have an impact on the team. He’s a massive player. I know what he can bring to the team. It’s my job to get the best out of him.

    What will he change?

I have my ideas I would like to keep for myself. I have to see the players act and behave. I want to do things my way but to convince them it’s the right way to live better.

I want people who are accountable for what I want them to do. I don’t want people hiding, I want them to take responsibility for the jobs. I want people who deliver passion and energy. Everyone who doesn’t buy into this, it’s not good enough for this environment.

There are things to change because they are not performing at the level we expect them to. We have to help them. To do that I need to know what’s happening and to understand how they’re feeling, what they’re lacking. If I get to that point I can help them. Then they will trust me and follow me.

When I was playing in England, I started to realise what Arsenal meant. I was born in Barcelona, a club with similar style and values. I always said to people my dream was to play for this club. Arsene Wenger believed in me and gave me the opportunity, then he made me captain. I wouldn’t be sitting here if he didn’t have the vision to give me the opportunity to join this incredible club.

On Arsenal fans concerned that he hasn't managed before

I completely understand their concerns. That’s the only thing I can say. I will try to convince them I am prepared. I wouldn’t be sitting here if I didn’t feel prepared. I will [use] every drop of blood to make this football club better.

How close was he to replacing Arsene Wenger?

A little bit close. It wasn’t the right time. The right time came now. I’m glad I learned a lot from that experience. It was great to be part of the process. I was very prepared for this one and it helped.

On what he's learned from Pep Guardiola...

What I’ve learned is you have to be rutless and consistent and have to fit every day the culture of the club to get a winning mentality.

To sustain it is even harder so every day is important. Every act is important. His workrate is incredible.

The secret is the people around you have to believe what you're trying to deliver. You have to be able to transmit it and people will believe in it.

First thing to do is change the energy. Last week I was here with Manchester City and I was a little down after the game. We have to try to engage everyone. We have to convince the players of what I want and how I want to do it. They have to accept a different way of thinking.

I want to get all the staff with the same mindset. We have to build a culture to sustain the rest. After that we can talk about other things. We need to start winning games and raising the level of confidence of the players.

Finally we need to engage the fans anad transmit with our behaviours our intentions of what we want to bring. We have to plug these things together. There is so much to do, I’m so excited.

I’m sensing a good energy since coming in today. I’m so happy.

It was strange [coming back in today]. I'm in a different role and position when I left a few years ago.

It was always a dream from the day I left. When I left I said I’m going outside, I’m going to learn and get prepared and hopefully one day I can come back here when I feel I am ready to make that step. I have so much respect for this club that if I didn’t feel ready and prepared I wouldn’t be sitting in this chair.

I feel back home, extremely happy and proud to be given the opportunity to be maager of this club. I’ve been preparing for a few years for this challenge. I know the expectations and stature of this club and what it deserves. I’m ready for the challenge and can’t wait to start working with the players.
