  1. Kolasinac & Tierney out till new yearpublished at 14:55 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2019

    Arsenal

And Mikel Arteta will have to make do without Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney as he bids to shore up the Arsenal defence.

The club confirmed earlier that left-back Kolasinac will be sidelined until January after injuring the ligaments in his right ankle during Sunday's 3-0 defeat by Manchester City.

The Bosnian, 26, came off after 40 minutes at the Emirates. Arsenal say the defender is "aiming to return to full training in January."

Meanwhile, fellow left-back Tierney has had surgery after dislocating his shoulder in the 3-1 win at West Ham on 9 December. The Scotland international is expected to return to training in March.

Appointing Arteta is a massive gamble for Arsenal, don't think it is a job for a rookie manager at the moment. The defence is a shambles and they could easily get dragged into a relegation scrap. If they do, can you imagine the moaning gooner masses at the Emirates?

  3. Arteta becomes Arsenal boss on deal to 2023published at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2019

    Arsenal

Here's our story on Arsenal appointing their former captain Mikel Arteta as head coach on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

The 37-year-old won the FA Cup twice in a five-year career with the Gunners and succeeds fellow Spaniard Unai Emery, who was sacked in November. Arteta had been working as a coach under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, joining the club in 2016 after retiring as a player.

"We need to be competing for the top trophies in the game," Arteta said. "That's been made very clear to me in my discussions with [owners] Stan and Josh Kroenke and the senior people from the club."

Arteta will do well at Arsenal, on the condition that he signs Santi Carzola as player/assistant head coach. Will he bring in a defensive coach? He's a smart cookie with a good head on him, I think he'll bring some passion back to the club.

Arteta's former team-mate Per Mertesacker, a defender who won 104 caps and a World Cup with Germany, is already on the coaching staff at Arsenal. Perhaps he's the man to be defensive coach?

I wish Arteta all the best but he's on a hiding to nothing at Arsenal until he can get some defenders in, and the fans will be on him the second things start going wrong, just like with Emery.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he felt last season that Leicester might be top-four contenders this term. Guardiola is evidently a big fan of Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers.

"They are a fantastic team," said Guardiola. "They have a lot of quality in the middle, good on the counter-attack and have control in all departments. They sold (Harry) Maguire but apart from that, it is the same."

Michael Mueller: Arsenal fans should be very happy with this appointment, but why Arteta has taken it is beyond me. Under the best manager in the world at one of the biggest and best clubs in the world, surely a better job could’ve come along a bit later down the line.

It is interesting to note Mikel Arteta has been named as Arsenal's new head coach, rather than manager.

Everton caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson is remaining tight-lipped on the prospect of Carlo Ancelotti coming into the club, choosing to wait until it's made official.

He says he's not spoken to the Italian, but is keen to "continue his education" after taking charge for the last three games and made his pitch by stating "no-one knows the players better than me".

He said: "It would be fantastic to work under a top manager, I've worked under a few in the past, and I want to continue my education, if possible."
