Jawad Kayani: In 2016, BBC had a match day live program for European Leagues. The BBC asked viewers that which player do you think will become a football coach. I mentioned that Arteta has the qualities to become a coach so today this thing became a reality

Arsenal are the same distance away from the relegation zone as they are the Champions League places - seven points above Southampton, and seven below Chelsea.

Endurance Aikpokpodion: Arsenal do not need new players in my opinion. I still maintain that a good manager will get the best out of those bunch. Tierney, Kolasinac, Luiz, Holding, Bellerin and Maitland-Niles are world decent defenders. Let's not forget Saliba will join next season

  9. 'Most fans don't care about Club World Cup'published at 16:55 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2019

Jurgen Klopp wants to change the perception of the Club World Cup as Liverpool prepare to face Flamengo in the final in Doha on Saturday.

The Reds faced criticism for fielding their youngest-ever side in the Carabao Cup loss to Aston Villa, choosing instead to focus on events in Qatar.

"The view in Europe is different to the rest of the world [about its value] but we want to change that view," he said.

"Liverpool fans want us to win - most of the other fans don't really care."

The Liverpool manager added: "Will it change the view in Europe? Probably not."

The game on Saturday will be live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, with the programme starting at 17.15 GMT.

Tomos Evans: Time will tell with this Arteta appointment but I genuinely believe there were far better, more experienced candidates for the role, particularly for a club like Arsenal.

  11. Nice gesture from Real Sociedadpublished at 16:49 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2019

Here's a nice story, Real Sociedad thrashed fourth division side Becerril 8-0 in the Spanish Cup on Thursday.

    That's not the nice bit...

The La Liga club have invited the whole village of Becerril, population 754, to a future Real Sociedad game.

At a match of their choice, the people of Becerril, along with the club's players and staff, will have their transport, tickets and dinner paid for as they take in some top-flight action at Anoeta Stadium.

Away from Arsenal... Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski will have a groin operation following their final game of the year against Wolfsburg on Saturday.

He has scored 30 goals in 24 games across all competitions for Bayern this season.

The Pole will be out for 10 to 14 days - but the winter break lasts for a month.

"We don't want to lose any time," said Bayern kinda caretaker manager Hansi Flick on Friday.

  13. Emery on the language barrier in Englandpublished at 16:41 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2019

Guillem Balague asked Unai Emery is the language barrier was a major problem at Arsenal.

Emery is not fully fluent in English and his pronounciation - including of the word evening - drew ridicule from some quarters.

"The language barrier becomes bigger in people's eyes, because of the results," he said.

"I think if the results had been good things would have gone like the previous season - people would have allowed me to make mistakes, and found my English more acceptable than focusing on my mistakes.

"I have always made this effort from my first press conference, I always spoke to the players in English and I believe progressively I am speaking it better. Communication in football is very important and it has been one of the basic foundations of my success in Spain and France.

"Obviously I don't know how far I've got, whether it's at 40% or 50%, I still had a way to go. When the results are not good you have to answer more questions but always on the same line.

"Consequently my speech in the first or the second question of press conferences could contain phrases or words to express myself but the third or the fourth or the fifth I found more difficult. As a result I saw this barrier that I had to conquer and I believe that in time I would have done it but clearly I still had a long way to go."

Arteta is exactly the sort of choice Arsenal need - someone who knows the club, has time on his side and can put together a long term plan. A quick fix like Ancelotti or similar would have been a poor, short termist approach and just delayed the obvious deep restructure required.

Arsenal have not confirmed Mikel Arteta’s coaching team yet.

They "will be announced as soon as possible".

  16. Postpublished at 16:28 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2019

Mikel Arteta's news conference starts in just over half an hour. Here are some quotes on the club website to keep you going until then...

“This is a huge honour. Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We need to be competing for the top trophies in the game and that’s been made very clear to me in my discussions with Stan and Josh Kroenke, and the senior people from the club.

“We all know there is a lot of work to be done to achieve that but I am confident we’ll do it. I’m realistic enough to know it won’t happen overnight but the current squad has plenty of talent and there is a great pipeline of young players coming through from the academy.”

Manchester City's director of football Txiki Begiristain said: "Mikel, as a member of Pep's team, has contributed significantly to the club in his time here in Manchester.

"His work on the training field and detailed preparations have helped us become a side that wins with regularity and in style.

"This move to Arsenal is a further step in his football development and I am sure he will become a top-class coach."

Ben, Stockport: As a Man City fan I'm pretty gutted that Arteta has left us, but wish him all the best (except when they play us) all the negativity makes no sense when you look at what Lampard has managed at Chelsea so far this season! Good luck Mikel.

Mikel Arteta ended on the winning side in 63% of his appearances for Arsenal in the Premier League.

Only four players have a higher win percentage in the competition - Lauren, Ashley Cole, Marc Overmars and Sol Campbell.

That's only counting players to make 100 or more appearances so some random youth team player won't top the list on 100%.
