Tom Reed: I think Arsenal fans as a whole should be very happy with Arteta. They need to get behind him and put confidence back into the team and the club at large. As previously mentioned, only at the end of the season can we be critical. A new era begins!

First time managers are like buying a player from the Eredivisie. You can get a Pep-From-Barcelona/RVN, or end up with Gary Neville/Van Wolfswinkel. What I don't see anyone mention is Ancelotti being fired from his last 2 jobs (Bayern and Napoli) because of bad results. Is he on the downward slope of his career?

  6. 'I don't think Alderweireld deal will have a domino effect'published at 14:01 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2019

Tottenham v Chelsea (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Several Tottenham players are in the final year of their contract so Jose Mourinho was asked if Tony Alderweireld signing a new deal might lead to others committing to the club.

"I don't think it's a domino effect," said the Spurs boss. "Every player is a different situation. When players in the last year sign a new contract it must be a union of desires - with the club, the player, the agent, the family and friends. With Toby the expression of desire came at the same time from every person involved."

  7. Toby's happy here - Mourinhopublished at 13:57 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2019

Tottenham v Chelsea (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Jose Mourinho on defender Toby Alderweireld signing a new contract: "The club is happy, Toby is happy and I believe the fans are happy."

The new Tottenham boss added that he had "little" influence on the Belgian extending his stay with Spurs.

"I read that he said 'I couldn't be happier in another place'. That is the fundamental thing.

"The only thing I maybe influenced is that he knows my belief in him. He's played in every minute of every match since I arrived - six games."

  8. Aguero & Stones back in trainingpublished at 13:48 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2019

"There are a lot of games to play," said Guardiola. "The distance we have now can change in a few weeks. We try to prepare for the game tomorrow as best as possible."

I really don't see the issue with Arteta coming into Arsenal. People were unhappy when we took an unknown guy called Wenger and he worked out alright. Arteta has worked under one of the best managers in world football. He must be given a chance and not have people expecting instant success.

  10. Arteta deal almost done - Guardiolapublished at 13:42 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2019

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed the deal for his assistant coach Mikel Arteta to become the new Arsenal manager is almost done.

"Mikel is in London," he said. "He is close to doing a deal with Arsenal. That’s what I know."

Guardiola added that he would not be recruiting a replacement in the short term though.

"We stay with the same people who are here," he said. "He decided to move there and when you have a dream you cannot stop it, you have to follow your dreams.

"Arsenal was an important part of Mikel's career, it's one of the best teams in England, and I wish him all the best. I'm pretty sure he'll do an excellent job."

Nobody is exactly sure why it is taking so long for Arsenal to announce Mikel Arteta as their new manager.

But we are still waiting. And that means Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola might not be wanting to say too much about his - former - coach.

  18. Will Ferguson speak about Ancelotti?published at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2019

Everton v Arsenal (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

Down at Finch Farm we are set to hear from Everton caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson, but all the talk is likely to be about one man: Carlo Ancelotti.

The former Real Madrid, AC Milan and Chelsea manager is set to be announced as the new Everton boss in the coming days, which would be a coup for a club which is 16th in the Premier League table and whose last silverware was the 1995 FA Cup.

The big question is likely to be: how did Everton land the Italian? Ferguson might not be best placed to answer that, with clues likely found in owner Farhad Moshiri’s bank account!
